842912 2009-12-25 09:31:00 I'm on Telstra cable but if I wasn't it looks to me that Orcon would have the best plans, always depends where you live I guess. Twelvevolts (5457)
842913 2009-12-25 09:53:00 I've tried xtra, slingshot & vodafone.
I find all are very similar.
Good speed on the speedtest, but slow down to snails on a download.
Ocationally get a good burst but not very often.

Ok, called em before got some Indian women with such a bad attitude, she tells me that the big time plan is capped and u get a speed assigned randomly and u stay on that speed forever. Woah so much for time managed right? its just a scam thats been wrapped in ribbons and gift wrapped with gold and green paper. Another scam by telecom nice nice they got me good.

842914 2009-12-25 18:48:00 Don't talk to the Helpdesk about Bigtime, they know stuff all... Especially (apparently) the women you're talking to, seems to be talking out her behind.

Now, firstly make sure that you're using Telecoms newest DNS servers, so post back with whatever you're using. If you're using something like OpenDNS then you'll miss the local caching of things like YouTube and other such goodies so it's definitely best if you stick with it.

Second, what browser are you using?

Third, what port are you using when downloading? Can you try multi-threaded HTTP downloads?

Big Time IS a Traffic Managed plan, you'd be a fool to think otherwise, it's blatantly written all over their website and explained to you prior to you signing up. If you do high volume and don't wanna be capped then expect to pay per-GB for it, which *will* be dear!

So the question is: What are you downloading that's going that slow, what ports are you using, and what application are you using to do the downloading. That's where the answer to your problem lies...

Really how do you figure that?, Telstra DSl is $1.50 per addtional GB (if you purchase in 10 GB packs) while Orcon is $2. Orcons base plan looks like $6 cheaper however.

Telstra seems abit expensive when i checked online, and do their cables come to auckland

No your backward councils up there refused to allow the Fibre to run on the power polls insisting "all" had to run underground. That killed the Residential cable project for the entire country and nearly 10 years on most of NZ is stuck with bollocks DSL, do I still sound bitter? :)

I don't know much about computers only basics, i am using Firefox as a web browser, I dunno what ports in using, but i do know that megaupload, rapidshare etc, and everyother website except nz severs i get crap speeds

842917 2009-12-26 18:22:00 Yeah you're using MegaUpload / Rapidshare, commonly used for illegal filesharing. That's why they're slowed ... You seem shocked that Telecom is actually smart enough to slow those websites, sticking to what they said they were gonna do and manage traffic to slow P2P / Filesharing? Chilling_Silence (9)
842918 2009-12-27 05:54:00 The thing is its "managed" 24/7 and speeds are reduced to such a low rate its crazy. Yea i use rapidshare and megaupload to download music so yeah its illegal. chuanwai (12518)
842919 2009-12-28 11:00:00 Just checking an obvious thing here, if you're referring specifically to those filesharing sites being slow, do you have a premium account with any of them? If not, you're likely to get pretty slow speeds anyway, since they cap the dl's on their end aswell.

I'm on vodafone's red network, and despite their sometimes shoddy customer support, I get good speeds. I can have anywhere from 25-100kbp/s on a sharing site to over 1mb p/s on unrestricted dl's (ie sourceforge and the like)
I pay $90 a month for a basic phoneline and my bband, with a 20gb cap that I struggle to meet. (after shifting from a 5gb cap which I tended to rack up a couple gigs on before cutting back the dl's)

842920 2009-12-28 19:43:00 Get a premium RS account and then follow these instructions.

First get you links you want to download, eg.

rapidshare.com
rapidshare.com
rapidshare.com
rapidshare.com
rapidshare.com
rapidshare.com
rapidshare.com

Then use the website here (http://rs2ip.anonymailz.com/) to convert the links to IP addresses.

62.140.7.41
195.122.131.110
62.67.50.139
195.122.131.181
212.162.2.154
62.140.7.134
62.67.50.21

Then paste the new links into your download manager and away you go :p

(Make sure you have you username and password set in your download manager, in IDM I had to create four site logins 212.162.2, 62.67.50, 62.140.7 and 195.122.131. Then I could copy all the links at once and "add batch download from clipboard")

Now if you a free user try this below.

Link example - rapidshare.com

1. Click the "Free user" button
2. Wait until the countdown is done
3. View page source
4. Find method="post"
5. Copy the link on the left of the source; rs354tl2.rapidshare.com
6. Find rs354tl2.rapidshare.com IP address via http://domaintoip.com/
7. Replace rs354tl2.rapidshare.com with IP address, in this case; 80.239.137.155
8. Your final link should look like this: 80.239.137.155
9. Download

My point exactly!

1) You're doing something illegal, we know your IP, and can quite easily report it to your ISP (Who can easily report you to the relevant authorities). I'm in a good mood today, so I won't, but I'm just saying ...
2) The plan is specifically designed to slow things, exactly like what you're talking about. Yet you feel compelled to complain because they're sticking to their word? Suck it up and pay for a premium plan like Pro or Adventure if you can't stand that...

Either way, you shouldn't be doing it, and you shouldn't be complaining.
