Never cease to be amazed at the naivety in NZ.

NZ has always been a soft touch, when I came 40 years ago people didn't think that the KGB would be active here.

DSIR for example was wide open, people could walk in off the street and into laboratories unanounced, no gateman, no security.
Had a good go at the director of the day Mike Collins to put a stop to this. Even had him phone if he wanted to bring visitors to see if it was convenient.

We had classified military files, not that high level but useful info the Russian intelligence, I was probably the only one who kept them under lock and key. DSIR at that time was also full of leftie activists who protested against us doing any work for the military.

Then there was the Sutch affair what a joke.

After coming from industry where you were vetted by Intelligence, and where the Official Secrets Acts had to be signed before being engaged, and finger prints and mug shots taken the innocence of NZers was mind boggling

This naivetie seems to be still persisting even today, at least with the PM and her so-called advisers

1447749 2018-03-27 22:06:00 The Russian response to a previous claim of spies in NZ was (more or less)
'we dont need to know if NZ has 3 light tanks or 4 ' :)

I'm sure Ardern is well aware there will be spies in NZ every now & then. Not just Russians .
She just doesnt want to p8ss them off with expulsions , hoping for a trade deal .

Russians poison 3 people in the UK
Just ignore all the other civilian deaths caused by US, Russian, UK activities abroad .
Double standards

1447750 2018-03-28 01:34:00 We don't have a culture I think of spies, like intelligence officers, say like 007's Ian Fleming (UK telegraph article (www.telegraph.co.uk)) and the MI6 or whoever. The super powers can't not have them ...peeping on each other for decades I mean what do we have here of worthiness to spy on? A new formula narcotic milk? a pending new laser gun? kahawai chaser (3545)

That exemplifies exactly the naivety I'm speaking of, like 1101's comment about NZ's 3 tanks.

Just think '5 Eyes', and how it's likely to be easier to get hold of info in a soft touch country like NZ.

Nearer the truth than you thought,

" Any Chinese Spies who are embedded inside a NZ Political Party?" From the Daily Blog,
thedailyblog.co.nz

"Bill English says he has no issue with National MP Jian Yang having worked with Chinese intelligence in the past. He then went on to compare the situation to MPs who have worked for the NZ intelligence community."

www.stuff.co.nz

NZ must be the laughing stock of the western world security services, much to the glee of Moscow who mocked NZ today because we could not find any spies, and China who embeds its man in the National Party, how we got accepted into 5 Eyes is beyond belief.
