1447743 2018-03-27 09:44:00 We are in Wellington . I know people who have yellow stickered buildings . That is in 10 or 15yrs the council says it has to be completely demolished or have worked done on them completed .

1 . Does stickered buildings apply to residential? I guess if it is really really bad then of course but if it is ok for the next 10-15yrs , residential? How would they know?
2 . I know people who have some a small shop in the out skirt suburbs so the value isn't high . Basically $100k value that needs a $100k earthquake strengthening cost . Obviously not worth it . Pay $10-20k and have it demolished? Would anyone buy that if it was sold?
3 . With residentials assuming the council hasn't went inside and evaluated it, it's livable, if checked it just might not be up to the 39% earthquake rating . Would it mean though, a lot of houses out there which are being lived in might not meet the standard?
4 . I read in the news some retirees live in a earthquake prone apartment . Not working . On the NZ Super . Can't afford repairs . Can't sell . What happens? Apartment part of body corporate . Would anyone buy it for a near free price or would some not even do that . If that's the case, can they at all relinquish ownership and move out and get on with their life and rent .

Cheers .

1447744 2018-03-27 17:35:00 It does here, Hanmer is a town of mainly holiday homes that although privately owned are rented out to anyone who wants to hire one. Lots here have stickers on saying fine to use. gary67 (56)

They seem to be trying to avoid the facts that owners arnt going to pay the cost and yet they arnt allowed to demolish.

There are many 'historical' buildings that are obviously suspect . They would just fall over in a quake , killing all those inside.

Yep in Welly here too. A pensioner, near 80yr old, historical building, can't demolish, can't even pay for that anyway but her apartment itself needs $100k work done to it and it's part of body corp. Along Courtney Place, Manners Mall there are historical buildings. The last I heard, the council wants the work done to them deadline to be bought forward.
