Consumers could be the winners, and Sky TV the loser, as Australian pay-TV company Fetch eyes a move into New Zealand.
Based on its Australian deals, the company could offer significantly more content than Sky at a cheaper price. In Australia, its most basic packages cost as little as A$6 ($6.45) a month.

As well as offering subscription channels and catch-up services as Sky does, Fetch also has integration with Netflix and streaming video on demand (SVOD) service Stan — similar to Lightbox — and offers the option to rent or buy more than 7000 movies including new releases, and buy TV shows by the episode or by the series.

Fetch has 650,000 subscribers and is adding 20,000 per month, says Lorson. Last year, Fetch added 200,000 subscribers while Sky lost 37,000.

In Australia, the company offers four A$6 ($6.45) packs — kids, knowledge, entertainment and vibe, which includes sports channels — as well as an Ultimate pack combining the four, comprising 50 channels at a cost of A$20 a month.

Fetch operates on a pay-for-what-you-want model, where customers can choose what they buy without needing a basic pack first.

That could be especially attractive to sport fans: under the Fetch model, they would be able to pay roughly $6.45 a month for sport.

I'd sign up for sure. Always did tell Sky they'd do better if they allowed customers to choose like this.

1447161 2018-03-10 02:10:00 If Sky dont want to go down in flames then the HAVE to change their business model. No longer are they the only option for getting programs.

May be already to little to late for them.

In the article from Stuff
Fetch is an internet TV provider rather than a satellite service, as Sky is. It is reportedly "aggressively" looking at new market opportunities this year, including in New Zealand.

Last year when the guy from chorus was here changing one of the Vodafone decoders, he did mention in conversation that Vodafone were meant to be trialing and then changing all the decoders to internet based programming instead of how it delivers it from Sky now.

1447162 2018-03-10 09:17:00 Pay TV is now one of the most competitive services going. Every young dog and cat are angling for market share. Old dogs are waiting for the bones to be delivered(even if they are, the cats have have chewed off the meat first.). Sky has too many expectant shareholders! Laggard (17509)
1447163 2018-03-10 19:37:00 Competitive? In NZ, it's not.
Netflix is not exactly pay tv, it's an internet service.

Here we have Sky...and Sky.

I would sign up with the new lot, much better idea, choose what you like without having to have stuff you don't, price a lot better.
And still on my TV without the need to scroll through listings and download like the netflix type services.

1447164 2018-03-10 20:03:00 I will know there is a God if Sky goes bust. I have never had sky and had to put up with an onslaught of phone calls and visits for many years. I guess because my house must be one of a few in NZ without a sat dish on the roof. It was hard to remain calm when talking to them. Like hello **** I dont want ******* sky put me on a register so you ***** do not hassle me again. prefect (6291)
1447165 2018-03-10 20:10:00 Years ago when I lived on my own Sky knocked on my door trying to get me to buy it, at the time I didn't have a TV so told them if they supply the newest TV out at the time I would sign up. I never saw them again after that and didn't get a free TV either gary67 (56)
1447166 2018-03-11 03:38:00 Is there anyone else at Sky other than John Fellet?

Surely someone could tell him that most of the other packages are well under $25.00

I've always hated Sky since they gt the cricket rights.
But we must also remember that they do a lot of outside broadcasting.
That can't be cheap to run.
And pay the All Blacks!

1447167 2018-03-11 03:40:00 I have never ever had Sky.
But my house has a Sky dish on it.
I think I can finally take it down now, as I am pretty sure I will never want it.

1447168 2018-03-12 06:53:00 Sky already have their channels streamed over Vodafones fibre service.

all they need to do is upgrade existing firmware in their stb or launch a newer IPTV only unit.

If you are on Vodafone put this test url in your player software. Note it doesnt usually work in VLC, though not tested on the new V3. Works fine on Kodi though

.

Must be one of the most ugly websites Ive seen in quite a while.
Are they trying to emulate something from 100 years ago ? :)

Sky are now just milking it while they can.
As long as enough sky users keeping paying, they dont need to compete or match Netflix's pricing.
Things may change as they start to loose exclusive sports rights . Im sure Amazon will be bidding on those next time around.
