1445972 2018-02-05 21:26:00 My wife's aged HP computer, about 14 I think has stopped working.
Just boots up to blinking curser.
I put windows disk in & said could find hard drive.
I have a 350 GB spare, but my health is not good & I get easily stressed, so not a good idea.
Any ideas of someone in The Papamoa Beach area that could help, at reasonable price?
We had it upgrade to Win 10 Pro over 2 year ago and dont have copy of key.
Was thinking, maybe Linux?
Thanks,
Ian

1445973 2018-02-05 22:19:00 Someone has to ask - if it really is 14 years old then consider yourself fortunate and ask if fixing it is the best path? At 14 it will have left the departure lounge and been in a holding pattern for some years
Is it a desktop, meaning the screen can be re-used? Is the screen newer, an LCD?
I just think a small laptop or even an ex-lease box that is much newer would be a better option unless someone can fix it for free?

Thank you.
I'll have a look at ex-lease boxes.

1445975 2018-02-05 22:28:00 Yes, I have a 9yr old system and honestly on Trademe it's probably worth $25 re: successful auctions. You do find the odd fella trying to sell a ex-lease or old-lease might be a better term for $99 or more but no one buys those.

2 years ago, I picked up a $200 ex-lease Thinkpad laptop and then put my own SSD inside it. That was a much newer 2011, 5yrs old at that time.

1445976 2018-02-05 22:31:00 Depending on what's gone wrong, will depend on the fix. Could be one of several things.

Try safe mode.

Turn off your computer 2-3 times while booting (as it tries to start, press and hold in the power Button to turn off) - do this 2-3 times, on the 3rd Windows should automatically boot to the Recovery Environment after 3 unsuccessful attempts in a row.

Once you are within the Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot, and then Advanced options, then Startup Settings, and Restart.

When it restarts, you should see a number of options. Press the corresponding number for Safe Mode. ( 4 I think from Memory)

See if it restarts OK. If it starts OK on safe mode could be a driver problem, or some other software running in the background ( SOME AV's cause this exact problem)

It can also be caused by system corruptions ( which DOES happen to every OS)

Could also be a Hard drive problem, which if the case wouldn't matter what OS is installed, it WILL STILL Play up.

If you need to reinstall Windows 10, you wont need the product key, as the hardware will already be registered with Microsoft and it will auto activate once on line.

Being the age that it is, it simply can be past it. Changing to Linux wont help, you'll find unless you use an old version the newer ones may not work either ( got two old PC's here), Linux simply wont install unless its a early version.

My guess is dead HDD.
Swap it out and Linux Mint would run beautifully on it.

14 years or not, you only need high end for games and high specced for Windows.

1445978 2018-02-06 01:43:00 Ex-lease is probably the most stress free option - or you know some of us might be selling really good little machines on trade me right now :) I won't link it, too shameless even for me.

If you were in Hamilton I'd fix it, sounds likely you just need to swap the hard drive and reinstall windows but until you try who knows. I've given away newer machines, several times (must stop doing that).
With a bit of shopping around trademe often has great deals and old hardware is fine if you have modest requirements.

Just for the hell of it I tried an SSD with a core 2 duo and 2GB of RAM and windows 10 - ran better than a lot of "modern" PCs
