| 1447435 | 2018-03-19 07:13:00 | We just did some smallish reno's, finally after 18yrs living here replaced the aging leaking (unless the taps are really tight) small washing basin in the toilet which has a spray down spout to a small basin / vanity with a mixer tap and replaced the worn and dry carpet in the conservatory with tiles. We were able to get clearance special products. The toilet and bathroom still have embossed wallpaper with paint on top from the last owner. We have migrated the bathroom basin to a mixer (from 2 taps and spout). Both still vinyl flooring. If all things are functioning are renovation about looks? To look modern and new, it's the floor the wall and then the cabinets, basins and shower cubes right? Do tradespeople find them ho hum also like how a computer person when they get home the last thing some wanna spend time on are computers. The average user might just surf the web, well a old computer can do that, maybe with a SSD and if they want it to look new a new screen and a new keyboard and mouse. :) reno's are about looks. people are quite content to live in boring old cruddy looking house, then spend $$$ on reno, then promptly sell it. so they don't even get to enjoy their nice home. more often than not its about making it look good for the next person. ie more neutral colors etc. nothing off putting, no personal tastes. sometimes reno's are about function. eg accessibility for older person. or simply because its either broken or you have to pull it all apart to fix something. |

| 1447436 | 2018-03-19 08:11:00 | We are building a new house this year we have designed it all ourselves. Yes it will have a concrete floor but not the standard type it will be a rib raft floor. All of our services are located on outside walls so the only pipes in the slab will be waste pipes from the showers, toilet and bath. Absolutely every other pipe will be in the walls so that they can be accessed if any problems. I have worked as a kitchen designer, builder and joiner and this is my first attempt at designing a whole house. Sounds like a great project. Hope you keep us up to date with progress, photos etc. |

Ok, even with reno the outer walls and roof are still old right. We haven't done any big renovation. The embossed wallpaper in bathroom and toilet are at least 20yr old from when we bought it, the previous may had it longer. Our desks were picked at the school fair or school auction or something second hand from 1992 and still in use. Yeah the parents see reno as in cost. They rather go away back to their hometown etc .. or enjoy a nice meal. These light reno's are the first we have done after living here for 18yr, each time we used the toilet we just popped over to the bathroom to wash up or if that was used the laundry room. The previous place we were at, after living there for 20yrs the hard bathroom flooring not vinyl was used (not tiles) and the curtains and the wallpaper were the same when we sold it. We have a brown wooden coffee table .. but they cover it up cos they don't wanna spoil it. Same with dining table etc... Same with car - seat covers and additional car floor rubber mats. Cardboard in garage under the car. These light reno's were done after years of moaning but more successful ones were if they visited other people they're are quite close with and can relate to, and they wanna copy them and see their own as tired and tatty. |

Since our slab is on 300mm polystyrene blocks the waste pipes get sleeved so can be pulled out from outside and new put in if there are problems, one of the reasons I wanted this type of slab construction, the other is for better thermal properties and the fact our land sits in a valley that is all marble size stones under the dirt so it can move freely in an earthquake. |
