1446180 2018-02-11 06:44:00 Hi all,

new here, would love some advice from you guys please?

In between callouts at work I watch youtube on my phone, but was thinking about buying a chromebook to do the same, but easier to see.

But I have been googling chromebooks for sale in NZ, and have now become confused..my main concern is the Celeron processors being too slow?

All it will be used for is to watch videos or browse the web, nothing else, which is why I thought a chromebook would be good, as they have decent battery life and are basically in my mind used for browsing only?

An HP is the one I like, specs here, Processor: 1.6GHz Intel Celeron N3060 Dual Core Processor Memory: 4GB RAM Storage: 32GB Solid State eMMC Storage Graphics: Integrated Display: 11.6-inch HD display with 1366 x 768 resolution Ports & Connections: 2 USB 3.0, 1 HDMI, built in wireless & bluetooth Battery: Up to 12 hours. Obviously as its more of a toy to use at work, I like this price. There was also a Lenovo same specs, only $20 price difference.

So guys are these things faster than a laptop? Are these celeron processors okay? Nothing bugs me more than laptops which are slow and jerky with video..since its just Chrome OS I was hoping it would be okay.

Thanks all for any input, appreciated.

1446181 2018-02-11 07:12:00 Google Chrome operating system is a variety of Linux, it uses less resources than Windows so will probably be OK.
Perhaps you could go to the shop that is selling it and get them to demonstrate.
The Celeron is low end but still capable of basic tasks, like viewing YouTube.
(Chromebooks are in general low end laptops, so are not more powerful, the exception is Google Pixelbook, but it costs a lot more

.

Chrome is a linux kernel, as already stated, it isn't exactly an o/s in the sense of the usual ones....and is basically an online one.
So, it shouldn't be an issue with a low end CPU.

Granddaughter has one for school, it has an i3 CPU in it (Lenovo). She watches youtube a lot, and a lot of her school work is via online sites, and has video...haven't seen any issues with slowness or jerkiness.

1446184 2018-02-11 21:55:00 Thanks guys, looking at prices of i3 chromebooks, they are basically $600 plus, so I'll have to put up with a low end one. As long as it plays video I'm happy.
Not keen on tablets, prefer a keyboard..was given a Samsung 10 inch tablet as a present, been used for 5 mins and resigned to the cupboard the last year or two..lol
thanks for the replies.

1446185 2018-02-11 22:57:00 I have an HP11 Chromebook as you have described. The 1.6 Dual core cpu is quite fast enough, runs YouTube & TV on demand perfectly. Just make sure that the plugins & drivers are installed & up to date in Settings.
Battery life up to 10 hours.
No fan, dust proof, but does not overheat.
No antivirus etc required
If you want to turn create a keyboard toggle to disable the touchpad, search this forum
Good price.

Great, thanks for that, will go down to Warehouse Stationery later today and have a good look. Seems the best value by far for that price.
Thanks
