739085 2009-01-15 22:14:00 Our power company has after 25 years discovered that we have 3 phase power to our home!
Anyway they have altered the way we are now billed – we now have a “daily fixed congestion Chax4.1” as well as a “daily fixed capacity charge41”.
Am unsure exactly what these are and how they work – any experts out there on this?!!
Of course no response from our supplier!
Many thanks

739086 2009-01-15 22:58:00 Don't know what Retailer you're with, but I suspect they won't be able to answer your question.

And it doesn't surprise me that it's taken 25 years for them to discover this, having worked at an Auckland power company some years ago....

All the knowledge about what the capacity charges relate to will be with the Lines company - the retailers just recharge (after also clipping the ticket - but adding no value, of course!!!) the fees charged to them by the lines companies.

You will need either someone working at your local lines company or someone on this Forum who is working (or has worked) at your lines company to explain what these charges relate to - every lines company has slightly different terms for similar charges...

Aghh, they are a nightmare to deal with. I moved from Genesis to another provider a number of yers ago due to billing and meter reading problems. I am now back with them after they brought out the company I had moved to.There aren't really any alternatives in my area. Also there brownie points system is a joke and an oxymoran must have come up with the idea. You earn more point, the more electricity you use, yet they are wanting you to conserve electricity, what that all about?

Why should they know? They were told by the main Power distributor originally, thats whats on the records and thats what they go by.

My shop had 3 phase power and as a result they were charging me an enormous daily charge. The bill was $450. I rang and was told to change it you have to contact the distributor(They'll have their local number).

To physically change it is a mission so they downgraded me to 15kva instead.
Well downgraded me virtually.

To downgrade me properly involves electricians and all I cared about was the bill so virtually was fine. I couldn't get 8kva though which is what a normal house should be on.

And the pricing is a LOT less.

Whats yours?

739090 2009-01-16 02:48:00 The general rate “Household Anytime) was .2114 (less 10% discount). Now “Business Standard Anytime” .1155 – BUT have this “daily fixed congestion Chax4.1” @ .4944 and the “daily fixed capacity charge41”. @.0734. Have no idea how they charge these two – hence the original question. stuffed (1469)
739091 2009-01-16 06:35:00 Do you run a business? If you do, read no further.

If not, you need to talk both to Genesis (your Retailer) and Aurora-(operated by Delta who own the lines and set the line charges that Genesis just pass on).

Aurora/Delta www.electricity.co.nz

If you get no satisfactory response, then use the Electricity and Gas Complaints Commission, they are good people for sorting these things out.

Makes no difference whether he has a business or not.
Like I said - I got them to change mine at the shop.

739093 2009-01-16 07:28:00 MANY years ago, one factor in the billing of 3 phase power was the peak current on the most heavily loaded phase.
My favourite fish & chip shop had all his fryers on one phase and a horrendous bill each month. He rearranged the plugs and halved his bill.

Nowadays - the charging could be based on anything.

739094 2009-01-16 20:13:00 Thanks everyone – no not a business - just a home. Have emailed and faxed Genesis and Auroa – if no response will move to the next stage.

Now with that in the system does anyone know of an electricity monitor program to install onto a home PC. Sure know you can get a stand alone wireless devise but would like a program to monitor 3 meters and be able to store the data.
No prob to hard wire back to the meter.
Anyone any suggestions?
Many thanks
