738337 2009-01-13 22:46:00 But I actually agree with this guy.......

nz.news.yahoo.com

How many stupid travelers have Kiwi's had to foot the bill for in the last 6 months?...when you think the cost for each rescue is in 5-6 figures!

738338 2009-01-13 22:51:00 You heartless bastard!

A agree completley. :D

Under these circumstances, when it was 100% their stupidity that caused the incident their parents should front up for the bill.

If they'd been killed by a shark, or drowned fishing maybe it would be a little different, but nup, not in this case. Business is not charity.

Travel insurance probably would also have fixed this... edit - Cya - this is true...would be interesting to find out about that actually.

738339 2009-01-13 22:56:00 Doesn't sound very nice but I agree.
The family would have travel insurance (well they should have anyway) which may cover the costs anyway so why shouldn't the rental car company get paid?

Although thinking about it now, the travel insurance company probably won't pay out for something like this as it was their own fault.

738340 2009-01-13 22:59:00 Sad, but I agree. It's the pair's own stupidity that led them to their own deaths and the entrapment of their rental car. Though the parents should take responsibility and pay for the removal of the car, they should be given enough time to grief first and not forced to pay up too soon. qazwsxokmijn (102)

Why would it? Theres loads of idiots that go out in flimsy boats with no equipment and expect to get rescued for free too.

Stuff them, if they die from their own dumb actions then too bad.

Improves the gene pool.

Not sure. The one I have read maybe the ones that comes compliment with the credit card, the fineprint said, if you are going into some specified dangerous activities, you need to get aproval from the insurance provider or request it to be added. My recollection was skydiving, bungy etc and maybe even ski was in that list.

Could be different for normal travel insurance. Not sure.

Yeah I would guess that rental car issue should be addressed with the insurance. Not sure on the activities thou being it may be classified as such and that they crossed the barrier.

I have heard the same in Japan, Australian tourist who went to Beppu or Kagoshima - they got so close they could see the opening and inside it, I think that was thermal rocks.

That may not have been the best example I put there. You're right though.

738344 2009-01-13 23:27:00 Actually, on second thoughts, did the parents guarantee the rental of the car?.....or would it be against the estate?

I dont think you can charge willy nilly next of kin?

Mr Chan questioned why Ashkay had the rental car keys in his pocket when only his father and cousin had permission to drive the car.

So it would seem that the father must have signed something for the rental to be listed as a driver.

738346 2009-01-14 00:31:00 You feel for the family losing a son / whatever, but thats still no excuse.

Next time somebody loses a family member whats to stop them from paying their phone / internet bill? The only thing is they provide an ongoing service which can be terminated.

If I throw a brick through your window then as Im running away I trip and break my arm, I still have to pay to fix your window ...

Note: Not that Id ever throw a brick through anybodies window, but you know what I mean ;)
