737909 2009-01-12 08:36:00 Alright guys, next year I want to head over to the States and join the US Marines.

Here's the problem.

I need to be a US citizen (and probably a bunch of other stupid requirements)

How do I go about doing this without having to live over there for 6 years or whatever I heard it was?

737910 2009-01-12 08:44:00 Buy a passport.....even better, why not join the French foreign legion? :D

Seriously, why do you want to that? Have you tried the NZ military forces yet?

737911 2009-01-12 08:51:00 Was going to join our army but the Marines is more of a life long goal for me I think. --Wolf-- (128)
737912 2009-01-12 08:54:00 Surely it would make more sense to put your question directly to the US embassy ? ? Terry Porritt (14)

Probably. But I'm sure someone here knows (surferjoe?)

737914 2009-01-12 09:11:00 I was going to suggest the French Foreign Legion too. Getting married to a US citizen would be the fastest way but not the most practical. beeswax34 (63)
737915 2009-01-12 09:20:00 What is it about the US Marines that appeals? It is a cultural thing? Or the fact Marines shoot everything that moves!!! God loves Marines because the Marines keep heaven packed full of souls!! [/end full metal jacket...] andrew93 (249)
737916 2009-01-12 09:31:00 Well, probably the fact that the deadliest weapon in the world is a marine and his rifle.

And for the hell of it, what is your major malfunction numnuts?

Ok ok I'll stop with the Full Metal Jacket quotes now too

737917 2009-01-12 09:47:00 Seriously - have you considered the NZ military as a first option? Or is peace-keeping not your thing? If you are good / serious enough then the NZ SAS is world-renowned. They don't run around blowing their trumpets because they don't have to - they simply get on with the job. It's no cake-walk. If you want to be a grunt then I'm not sure if being in the army of a different country will be any better / worse - that depends on whether you want to see active service or not. It's not all shooting M16s, driving hummers and manning HMGs in choppers - there's a lot less to it than you might think. Hence I ask, have you considered being a NZ grunt first?

Being a grunt might not be your cup of tea - so why not try before you buy? Plus there are plenty of other career options in the armed forces - if you have the smarts why be cannon fodder? There are better military careers other than being a grunt. Also consider that applicants are vetted before acceptance - an eagerness to kill is one way of ensuring you never get in (they will be thinking : "Fruit loop alert!!!").

737918 2009-01-12 10:06:00 I have considered the NZ army, and the SAS isn't really my thing. I want to see active service. I want to go to the war in Iraq/Afghanistan. But in saying that I'm not just "out to kill" I just want to do something with my life and the Marines seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.

Besides, we all know the Army stands for:

Ain't
Ready
to
be
Marines
Yet
