737979 2009-02-15 18:08:00 This site has a lot of international info (mashable.com), but I bet it's in local measure/currency.

I found this too: (corrected to US $ and Measures)

Date 2/9/09

Belgium 5.74
France 5.60
Germany 5.80
Italy 5.62
Netherlands 6.55
UK 5.05
US 2.16, although this is NOT corrected on a state-by-state tax/fees basis

And this is so-o-o-o wrong:

International Gasoline Prices

The prices shown are expressed in US dollars and US gallons.
These quarterly figures represent averages for the least expensive gasoline available at name-brand retail service stations.

* US - $1.43 (HUH? Where is this? I pay a full dollar more than this!)
* Hong Kong - $5.24
* London, England - $4.83
* Oslo, Norway - $4.38
* Tokyo, Japan - $4.34
* Quito, Ecuador - $.50
* Jakarta, Indonesia - $.52
* Kuwait City, Kuwait - $.76
* Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - $.93

737980 2009-02-15 18:41:00 Out of curiosity, just what is that price nowadays - for 2 grades of petrol & also for diesel?

Laura and SJ - C'mon, no hijacking :annoyed: this thread please.

With the cost of crude oil DOWN and petrol UP, a petrol price thread on its own would be a good idea.

Start of next year I'm joining the NZ Army as either a Rifleman or a Vehicle Mechanic.

Go for the Vehicle Mechanic so you will have a job when you leave the army. Unless you want to make international news by joining the Taleban when you get out, there ain't many jobs for a rifleman outside the military. Then again, with the SAS and Marines in your head, you will probably go for bullets instead of spanners.

Made a few phone calls to the US Marine Recruiters, a couple said they'd call me back but when I gave them my phone number they were stumped even when I explained I was calling from NZ.

Hey, most Americans :confused: would not be able to locate Canada on a world map and they probably think Australia is part of Africa. (Well OK SJ, maybe Canada, but the likes of Palin did not know what countries were in North America. :waughh: )

I cannot be, nor will I assume any responsibility for persons who cannot find New Zealand. I know where it is and that's enough. I will keep you as a secret if you wish.

Finding Canada however - may NOT be a good thing to be able to find.

737983 2009-02-16 06:22:00 WolfForest22, get out to Hornby Books for this book: AMONGST THE MARINES, by Steven Preece.

Hornby Books is a second hand bookshop so the price will be sweet.
ph: 349-5413 ask the lady if it is still there (was 3 weeks ago), bottom shelf on left wall facing the checkout counter.

The book shows what it is really like being a Marine and I believe you would find it a good read.

When I was at that bookshop, I bought MY WAR by Colby Buzzell.
Colby was an ordinary guy who wound up as a machine gunner on a Stryker in Iraq. Bored most of the time and with the internet on base, he started a blog about his daily life as a soldier. After a few months his blog went big time and USA newspapers were quoting his blog in news articles. It is one of the best books (of its type) that I have read. The book would probably get the Metla Seal of Approval if Mets ever got around to reading it. Colby Buzzell is absolutely amazing. He doesn't glorify a soldier's life nor does he totally trash it - he just tells it like it is. Laugh out loud in places, tragic in other places. He had no journalistic experience or writing qualifications but when he left Iraq at the end of his tour, the pilot insisted he fly First Class - that's how popular his blog was. If you want me to send it to you, PM me.
