737949 2009-01-14 02:41:00 I find it depressing any young Kiwi would want to go and join the US armed forces primarily used these days to secure corporate profits via military contracts and control of world resources (mainly oil), at the expense of the American tax payer and huge loss of human life .

I can't think of ANYTHING less honorable than joining the US Milletary .

Join the NZ milletary, sure not going to see much action (we hope), but at least you are not being used for profit .

This is a really old saw by now .

If it was for oil - then where is it?

We don't have any special buying or seizing privileges on oil . In fact, we are paying a very high price for it .

737950 2009-01-14 05:25:00 I got a mate who ended up in the Aussie army, Parachuting into hotspots.

He loved it.

Got another mate who worked security in Baghdad, he loved it as well.

I say go for it, The Marines maybe out of reach but there are plenty of similar options.

The point, SurferJoe, is not the price you (or we) are paying for it, but the security of supply . Iraq has the largest proven reserves of anybody (about 500 years worth at current rates of production) . Having control of that in the long term is worth a great deal in terms of security of supply . A short term price spike is acceptable, given the absolute dependence on petrochemicals .

All war is about property .

737952 2009-01-14 06:03:00 Well, probably the fact that the deadliest weapon in the world is a marine and his rifle.

And for the hell of it, what is your major malfunction numnuts?

Ok ok I'll stop with the Full Metal Jacket quotes now too

OMG, how many US war movies you seen?.....LMAO, we come in peace, shoot to kill....

FYI the British SAS, is 10x better than any US Marine....Mate, the Marine's are grunts, thats all!!

737953 2009-01-14 06:09:00 Hmm, well that quote is in 2 movies I can think of straight off the top of my head, Full Metal Jacket and Jarhead. Both good movies.

The SAS I think cannot be compared to the Marines. Your right, the Marine's are grunts. Just like every Rifleman in our Army, but your not bagging them?

I'd rather be a grunt in the middle of the desert in Iraq for 6 months than I would rappelling down some building shooting terrorists inside (and whatever other crazy stuff the SAS do)

737954 2009-01-14 06:21:00 Trust me, I know what I'd be getting myself into .

I think July this year I'll be spending a week out at Burnham with what they call a Careers Expo for our Army which gives you a taste of army life .

And just for the record:

If I don't/can't get into the Marines/US Army I WILL be joining our Army .

I will look into it more and talk to ex marines etc . Thanks for the input guys .

LMAO . . that was spoken like a true teenager!!!, sorry buddy, but the whole point is, you dont . . . . just like every teenager . . . LOL .

#1 fault of every teenager is they dont listen to their elder's . . . hehe

737955 2009-01-14 06:24:00 The SAS were out there before the marines and will still be there when the Marines are licking there wounds back home. It's always been like that and it will continue like that, they are special forces it's what they do. As I said in an earlier post i know one so not just spouting off. But it does sound like your going off on the movie stuff which has no relation to reality.

It's OK Sol as they get older they learn that they don't actually know it all just like we learnt that lesson.

Sorry but whether 17 or 77, it's not hard to know that if you go to war you will possibly die (or be injured/paralyzed/messed up for the rest of your life). I know in training (AARC / Boot camp / whatever) they will tear you down physically and mentally, and yes I do know it will not be easy.

So before you go judging me by my age, I DO know what I will be getting into, I DO know that I may never come back (if I do go) from any war/foreign country, I DO know it will not be summer camp.

And lets see, my parents don't care whether I go or not, my grandfather who served in WWII is now dead, so sorry who was it you told me to listen to?

And no I am not saying I know everything, and no I am not going by any movies (by dropping a couple of quotes mean I now relate reality to movies? Um ok nice logic there)

I bet none of you, at my age, even considered joining any type of military, and I could almost guarantee none of you did ANY time in the army. Yet now that you're all old and sitting behind a computer screen you think you can talk like you've served.

Yeah, as Sol mentioned your talking like a know nothing kid, Your life experience is near zero yet you think you KNOW.

That said, I expect kids to talk like kids, and your old enough to be in charge of your destiny, so do so, and don't give a **** what others tell you, But you will look back on this conversation from a completely different perspective in 15 years time, when your grown up and lived a bit of life.
