738588	2009-01-14 09:36:00	The rental guy still has to make a profit, if I were him I'd still want them to pay but I probably wouldn't mind waiting if they needed some extra time.. Then again, perhaps Mr Chan really couldn't afford to spend the $2000 and desperately needed it back for some reason.. I don't know but there could be a lot of reasons Or he may have just wanted to cover his ass and not loose the money if they left the country and didn't pay	Agent_24 (57)

Had he been Australian there may have been a different outcome, because there would be a lot of bad media on him if he charged his fellow (idiot) Aussies. But judging from the responses from the kiwis here, had it been a kiwi, he probably would've charged the family anyway	--Wolf-- (128)
738591	2009-01-14 09:48:00	One thing I forgot to add in... With quite a few Chinese business people, they tend to be straight up front about things. An example is my father. Talk to him about opening a business, he'll look at the site and he might say won't work. Not enough parking, bad location etc. He says what he sees, not nesscarily means it in a bad way. But it can offend those he speaks to. Mr Chan is probably in the same boat IMHO. Says it straight out, not meant to be in a bad way but is up front about it. 738592	2009-01-14 11:00:00	No matter if you are black, white or brindle or in fact come from another country. Any bills I still owe get paid from my estate after my death. First we have probate. Any person can make a claim. After all debts have been settled then those named in a will should receive what is left over. en.wikipedia.org Every person here on PressF1 has a Will don't they? They also have a whole of life insurance to cover all debts and costs of funeral. Was any person here who posted actually a witness to the event? The other thing that should be noted is that there may be a coroners inquest as to the circumstances of the deaths. The inquest, hopefully, would get to the facts and not rely on news reports or the collective wisdom of PressF1 members.	Sweep (90)
738593	2009-01-14 11:13:00	To the author of the original post - if you believe you can do better than that and improve NZ's reputation, please put that in action, e.g. donate money, set up an accident victims trust etc. What happened to the victims is truly a tragedy and everyone should do something to help - but only if that's affordable ($2000 can cause a difficulty in a small business' cashflows). (this thread is about the ownership of tourism business and the fact that a non kiwi is giving us a bad rep - not whether the company should have charged the family - there is another thread for that) I still think it is sad that so many non-kiwis own tourism businesses in NZ. And they clip the ticket all the way. If I went to China on holiday I would like to be shown round by Chinese, and be served by Chinese. Not Kiwis or Europeans.	Digby (677)
