Wait, You hate HD.

Yes, combine that with the context-sensitive ads for BikerPlanet.com at the top of the web-page and you will have a whole new life open for you.

739048 2009-01-16 22:14:00 One thing you will find is that motorbikes are virtually invisible to other motorists. Cars, etc pull out in front of you all the time and if you aren't an extremely defensive driver and always prepared for that then you won't last long. :(

FoxyMX is right - I haven't ridden for twenty years - but rode trail and road bikes for three years from when I was 17 to 20.

To this day I drive my car with all of the skepticism that I learned on a motorbike - it is ingrained. I quickly learned that it is safer to just assume that the driver has not seen you.

Oh, and you might feel like a dork wearing a high visibility vest, but it is worth considering...

739049 2009-01-17 07:57:00 I'm going to buy a motorbike. I've only ever ridden a bike once, around a padock on a 550xl Honda. My brother advises me to get a small 250 to learn with. Ok.

But... ultimately I want a road machine to commute around town, perhaps a 750 or maybe 900 Honda, to go up and down occasionaly between Napier and Auckland.

Any suggestions?

I know there are a few good biker contributers here, so please give some advice.

Cheers,
G

You will get the inevitable "buy a GN250" recommendation on KB. My only reply to that is not fast enough on the motorway to be safe, the newer model china versions are known to have issues and you need to buy a brand new set of tyres.

Buy whatever you want from the 250cc range. My only recommendation would be a 4 stroker for cheaper running costs and less (immediate) maintenance.

739050 2009-01-17 08:35:00 I'd love to get back on a road bike again but I'm too much of a wimp.

You need defensive driving all the time no matter what you are driving.

Just a few days ago I stopped on the side of the road due to a storm and I could not see very well. Driving a RAV4 at the time.

I dropped a 650CC Triumph Bonneville just once when riding over an oil slick on a wet road.

I also grazed body parts when falling off a pushbike a couple of times. No cc rating there.

While at work these days I drive anything up to 40 tonne loaded.

739051 2009-01-19 07:46:00 Rode bikes up to 400cc for years, without a mishap.

Last week I was in my car (Mercedes SLK230 Kompressor) and took a railway crossing S bend at my usual 100 km/h on cruise control. All hell broke loose, but the ESP took over and kept me off the armco, but I forgot to take my foot off the brake, ended up doing a 360° + another 180° spin on the seal, ended up neatly parked on the other side of the road pointed back the way I had come from.

No other traffic around, no injuries, damage or witnesses.

Bloody council had only just laid 50mm of grit (over melting tar), I never saw the sign.

Reminded me of the care needed on corners with loose shingle or white lines when I had a bike.

damn good thrill though... felt like trying it again.

Recently I've heard or seen some other reference to accidents caused by seal bleed not being properly recorded. They probably would have put it down to "speed". All the ESP and ABS in the world is no use if the road has turned to slime.

I think that the contractors cut corners by using lower melting point tar when doing work outside of summer temps.

739053 2009-01-19 08:28:00 I think our roads are the cheapest nastiest design, built as cheaply and nastily as possible.

And I wouldn't just blame the contractors, they are being squeezed as tightly as possible, quality has to suffer right across the board.

If those handing out the contracts insisted on a quality product and paid for it then our roads would be fine.

739054 2009-01-19 08:29:00 Get used to the fact you will come off your bike, only thing you can do is get good gear, drive with light, on wear light coloured gear, dont ride pissed watch for cars coming from your side. Otherwise if you live they will lean over you and whine I never saw you . prefect (6291)
739055 2009-01-19 08:51:00 I got back into biking afte a 25 year gap on a 125 cc. Great for commuting around town but too underpowered for the open road. Always maintained I didn't want a bigger bike but just got fed up riding on open roads in wind, having to ride on hard shoulders.
Bought a BMW F650CS, which has proven to be a very safe and economical machine. The 125 was a good start but a 250 would have been better. i often ride with a mate who has a 250 and he goes through the windy bits faster than me but suffers when it comes to overtaking in a short distance.
Have fun - I do!

Aw gee, I don't know about that .... in the late 50's/early 60's, I used to fall off my 250cc bike nearly every Friday night going up Titirangi Rd. In those days it was just a double lane strip of concrete with BIG falloffs into ditches each side. Having been a couple of hours or 3 in the "Steinie Cellar" opposite the Civic, it was probably a wonder I had got that far anyway. Had I been sober, I would have really hurt myself.

It clouded my opinion of Auckland. Made me think Auckland was a real dangerous place to own a motorbike, so...I sold the bike and up and left town for Sunny Hawkes Bay.

Never fell of a bike since that day.
