As a business, where does it end? Did AirNZ pay their parents to come over for free. Are they gonna get a free funeral too? AirNZ gonna fly them back home too for free?

Yes no spare key is silly, but again, they might be a no frills backpacker type company.

738358 2009-01-14 06:06:00 It was their decision not to pay for insurance. Or any insurance for that matter like life insurance. If they died in Australia, is it gonna cause this much issue too ... oh ... he died and where is the sympathy cos he does not have life insurance.

Life insurance may be a bit more lenient, but travel insurance may hold a stick up, didn't pay a surcharge for dangerous activities like glacier climbing, sky diving etc. to be included, and that they broke the rules and endangered themselves.

738360 2009-01-14 07:55:00 The 'key' was one of those computerized locks that is why it could not be broken into and driven back, also the previous rentee had lost the second set of keys, hence the problem.

The time to arrange a chipped key replacement at reasonable cost is while an original key is still available. Was the other rentee also overcharged for key replacement?

738361 2009-01-14 18:41:00 The manager of the tow company shows his colours too
"Mr Arundel said the journey to collect the car was an 860km each way trip, which would normally cost $1600-1700, but he charged between $500-$1000 by combining it with another job in the area." www.stuff.co.nz

Does this mean that if there wasn't all this publicity he would have charged both clients $1600-1700?

738362 2009-01-14 20:46:00 A couple of guys used stupidity to end their lives.
They left behind bills.
Who pays?
Like all other bills & debt it's up to the family to sort it. Its that simple.

The media coverage is ****, but thats the media for you.

One of the media articles quotes one of the family saying that the only warning that they noticed was about falling rocks in another area and that the brothers didn't cross any barriers. Maybe the stupidity stick needs to be waved at the locals responsible for public safety.

The rental company and others seem to have backed down on charging especially as some of the charges seemed over the top.

738364 2009-01-14 22:01:00 I highly doubt there are no warnings, there are other articles and photos of tourists crossing the barrier to get a better view.

I see the misdirected anger stories are coming in now from grieving cousins etc

No, i think he was saying, he saved both party's individual costs of towing separately.

I guess you have it in for him eh?.....ever been in business?

738366 2009-01-14 23:13:00 I'll be sure to keep my eye on the obituaries. When i read something like "SolMiester has been killed in a car accident" i'll be sure to call you a stupid IT Technician in your absence for putting a strain on my taxes when a helicopter or ambulance is sent out to try and collect you.

Have some god damn respect for the dead, regardless whether of they are travelers from out of town, they still deserve all the help that can be offered to try and preserve their lives.
