I have a raft of Māori dictionaries here and all of them have variations on "New Zealander of European descent" type of thing (which is what I am). The Harry Orsman dictionary of NZ English gives as one definition "Especially in Māori use, and especially in address, a non-Māori outsider, one ignorant of Māori ways, an interloper. (Often perceived by some non-Māori as a term of racial abuse.)" Of course lots of Pākehā use "Māori" as a term of abuse as well, even though it just means "ordinary" in its original meaning before people of different ethnic origin came here. No doubt some Māori have used the term Pākehā to mean white pig when they were angry - the tone of voice will give it away! Personally, I think the term Pākehā reflects who I am - I am certainly not a European. I am a NZ born NZer who feels an alien when I go to England. |

I think the term Pakeha might have undergone a similar translation to Gay. Who uses the word gay in it's original context these days? |

| 738015 | 2009-01-13 04:09:00 | @ the_bogan - Well, that may be true. It is curious to me what has happened with the use of the term, and why the Stats Dept is so gun shy about using it. I am 63, and have never met Māori using "Pākehā" specifically as a derogatory term, even though I have worked in many predominantly Māori situations over the past 15 years. They have certainly at times referred to Pākehā (e.g. the government, or rednecks) in derogatory terms but "Pākehā" has not been used in the way in which a redneck might say "black bastards". I have been referred to in the heat of a marae event as "Ngati Computer" though... Certainly some Pākehā have been sensitive about the term, for reasons that escape me. I take it as a badge of honour frankly - it sums up my ethnic origin in a way that is unique to the country I live in. Gays re-claimed the term queer for themselves; no better way to take the sting out of what was once a derogatory term. Maybe that will happen with Pākehā as well. Hope so. |
