737929 2009-01-13 05:47:00 The US marines suck when compared to a force such as the UK Para's or SAS, all you get for joining the US marines is a big ego. Join the NZ SAS and then transfer to the British one, you'll get to see enough death and destruction to last a lifetime. I have a friend from the UK whose brother joined the Para's and then upgraded to the SAS they are still in Iraq and Afghanistan and will be for a long time to come. Don't aspire to be second best try to be the best. gary67 (56)

He could use a machine gun on a tank and kill all the opposing force.

Gary's right, if you can survive the NZ SAS training, becoming a US Marine would be a holiday. Our SAS was on the ground in Afghanistan and even the Taleban were scared of them, especially because they could never find them or even see them until it was too late, then they had an Oh Mahom......... moment.

737932 2009-01-13 07:47:00 I just Googled "joining USMC", maybe thats too obvious.
Perhaps airing one's adolescent fantasies on a forum is less life threatening.

737933 2009-01-13 08:05:00 I can't remember the documentary's name... might even have been one of Michael Moore's, but it's not being killed that you should worry about, but surviving an attack and being horribly disfigured/disabled for the rest of your life.

Imagine how much fun you'll have with half your face missing.

And all that sacrifice for a country that's not even your own (I'm not bagging the US, heck I even lived there for 4 years).

Just something to think about.

737934 2009-01-13 08:24:00 Just had an extra thought Joining the UK is mybe not such a good idea because of all the friendly fire from the Americans. Who needs enemies when you have friends to kill you gary67 (56)
737935 2009-01-13 08:38:00 In terms of pride, I'd rather be in our NZ Army.

However, in terms of doing something that not many people would ever even consider (at least not in NZ) is joining the Marines. Not only would it be more of an adventure (outside my comfort zone) but it'd also give me a chance to see what the other side of the world is like. Not many people (in NZ) can say to their kids "I served as a Marine over in the States for x years and fought in _______" (and are alive to tell the story)

Besides, only in the Marines:

737937 2009-01-13 09:55:00 You can get those experiences without joining the Marines. andrew93 (249)
737938 2009-01-13 09:59:00 Why is there so much anti-Marine business going on here?

As much as I support our Army, I just wanna do something a little different.
