Can't say I'm European, never been there, nor have my parents, or my grand parents. New Zealand, Born and bred. If war broke out then that's is what I would be fighting for, NEW ****ING ZEALAND, Not Europe, and not Pakeha. |

| 738001 | 2009-01-12 10:48:00 | I always state New Zealander. I was born here, as were my parents and grandparents. Further back the forebears came from Cornwall, Scotland, England and a Great Grandfather was born in what was then British Guiana, now known as Guyana. I can't fit all that in the space they give. There's no financial advantage in this country to claiming any of those other nationalities :D. |

According to my Grandmother, my father's side of the family has English/French/German/Spanish heritage. What am I? I don't know. Mostly I just say that I am a cave man with some education. |

| 738004 | 2009-01-12 19:15:00 | In NZ I suspect that a large number of Māori see themselves as Māori first, (their ethnic origin) and New Zealander second. Maybe they even see themselves as (say) Tuhoe first, Māori second, and New Zealander to get a passport! I believe ethnic groups originally started at the tribal level and have slowly grown / evolved into larger groups based on a presumed or real sense of affiliation (or tribes / communities being absorbed by others). I say 'presumed or real' because ethnicity not based on a 'tribe' is pretty much a contrivance, as evidenced by the genealogical mish-mash of posters on PF1 (myself included), and if you also consider the ancient history of various areas around the world. Once again, how far back do you go? But I believe more importantly, how far forward can you come in choosing an ethnic association? Interesting write-up (warning : is a bit long and boring) here : en.wikipedia.org It appears you can pretty much pick what you want - whatever ethnic group you feel you have an association with, cannot be denied. I can't deny anyone who feels they are best associated with Siths or Ginglethrusts and nor can the authorities, because there is no organisation or group that determines what is or isn't an ethnic group. It also sounds like some of us already use 'NZer' so all I can say is let's keep doing that (and encourage others) until the various bureaucrats who want to classify people according to some sort of arbitrary (and possibly meaningless) grouping actually change their forms to reflect what Kiwis want. Cheers Andrew |
