2009-01-12 20:05:00 | It would be easier to join the Brit . Army as we are part of the Commonwealth and you would go to all of the same places as the Yanks anyway . OR you could join the Aussie Army-pretty good money and perks and just across the ditch so you can jump back here for Christmas to spend it with family and your mates and catch up with them etc . Plus they also go to the same places as the Yanks . Otherwise are you up to the fitness standards of the outfit you want to join? They will have that on their website, how fit you need to be,what you need to be able to do: run, push ups,sit ups, swimming etc,to join up and pass,do a medical etc . ,entrence exam . Also you HAVE TO BE A TEAM WORKER in the military and help everyone even if you hate them you cant let them know that because when you need there help to get over the confidence course or doing something they will just get back at you because people no matter what keep grudges no matter what they say to people, they really do . You will also have to do what you are told to do,even if you think it's DUMB because THATS AN ORDER BOY,HURRY the F!@# UP!!! Also you have to be able to take people ranting/screaming/shouting/swearing at you in the face while you are standing to attention because you have not ironed a shirt/trou,polished a shoe/boot up to a MILITARY STANDARD not a CIVEE BUNCH OF S!@# or whatever they are screaming their head off for . In the military you live by time-(you HAVE to have a watch) for EVERYTHING!!! The thing is you want know what it is really like untill you do it yourself and then you can see whats it like for yourself . If I was you I would join the TF Army here in NZ to get a taste of it,see if its your kind of thing or not and then decide from there, plus it will ground you and help you sort things out,and get you used to a military life/culture etc . and help to square you away if you do decide to go full time with either one of the Armies I have talked about, you will at least have a bit more under your belt and wont be jumping in the shallow end,so to speak . PS . The military LOVES TO RUN . NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY'S ARMY YOU JOIN, THEY ALL DO!!!SO YOU BETTER START RUNNING BOY!!! :2cents:

However, I have heard that non US residents (e . g . from Mexico) will be given USA citizenship if they serve in the US army (maybe Marines as well) . Keep in mind that your desire to become a Marine and see active combat duty is most likely a young man's stupid idea . Young guys have plenty of silly wishes . I know - I have been there, done that . Dreams are OK and can sometimes lead to exciting adventures, but in your case you could end up an amputee, or paralyzed for life, horribly disfigured, or dead . Before you sign your life away to go into combat, you really need to talk with those who have been there - search around, there must be military forums where you can discuss your idea of becoming a marine . It is not going to be like a Hollywood movie or computer game, and yeah I know that you know that but your knowing will be intellectual only . Life as a military professional can be a good career option . I am not anti military, and even suggested to my son and other young people that they at least investigate what the (NZ) military offers . One of my friends in the States has a son in the Marines - he has seen active duty in Iraq 3 times, much to the chagrin of his parents who are peaceful (anti military, actually), and I know a young guy from our town who joined the NZ Army to become a chef (he won a national award and loves his work) . I also have a friend in the States who joined the Marines and fought in Vietnam; he only recently told me he joined the Marines "to get killed", after his girlfriend jilted him . Wolf, if you *thoroughly* research your military options, which includes talking to those in the military or ex military, maybe Marines themselves, and if you still decide to seek combat duty, then I'd say "good on ya" and I would wish you luck, etc . But at the moment it appears to me that your desire is yet another crazy idea that young people have from time to time . What do your family and friends think of your Marine idea? . [edit] Memphis' advice of joining the Oz military is a good one . |

2009-01-12 20:35:00 | Trust me, it's not just a crazy idea I have. I have 1 year and I've already started to train hard out (for wherever I go) and I am really fit, and strong (mentally and physically) I know the risks involved and I'm willing to take every single one of them. I've done quite a bit of research, and in terms of fitness, right now I could easily pass our NZ Armys RFT. However, the US Army (almost could) and Marines I could not (yet) I'm a team player and I know that I will get the living **** torn out of me by the DI's and the stress and conditions I'll be put under. Unfortunatley, their website(s) are not working for me? (usmc.mill , marines.mill) so I cannot read more of the requirements but will continue looking into it.

2009-01-12 20:40:00 | But the US Army one works fine for me (http://www.army.mil/) EDIT: Just found this: "You can remain an Australian citizen and be in the US army, but you need to have US residency first 'green card'" Guess I only need that green card huh

2009-01-13 01:16:00 | I myself am a citizen, as my mother is from the US, so they got me dual citizenship as child. Joining the US army would be quite the hassle as one of my uncles is an Air force communicaitons officer or something like that, and he told me awhile back how much humming and haaing it is just to get in. So coming from the NZ and not having alot of experiance interacting within American culture, it might take awhile. Just my opinion of course, I don't have any real experiance in this area. | m3dic (14437) | |
2009-01-13 04:46:00 | US citizenship as an automatic reward (?) for putting in a few years in the US military isn't really true . I've seen Filipinos and Guamanian GI-type people never get the citizenship-part of the reward even after a 10 or 20-year stint and retirement . What you CAN do - if you can find a way to get into the US Marines (I don't recommend any of this, by the way) - is to talk to the Marine Recruiter and make sure that any promises you get are in a written and notarized contract . They "DO" contracts, ya know?!? :punk

2009-01-13 05:23:00 | Missed the edit limit . . . . OK . . . here's an idea if you just want to get to the US and get to stay a while, then join the Marines and try to get free citizenship afterwards . . . . . . Buy a sombrero, a serape, a guitar, some huaraches, and grow a mustache and then sneak across the Southern Border in California . DON'T try to come in thru Texas or Arizona - you will be shot by citizen anti-terrorist patrols! Learn a couple of Spanish/Mexican words - phrases are not required - words like: "Hola!" and "¿Que?" and "Si!" "Frijole" and "No habla Ingleesh" . You will get a large cash reward for making it into the US with free medical and dental, optical and maternity pay; a free home and a Small-Business Loan at 1% to open your own 7-11 Store with a real Slurpee® machine and "Scratchers©" dispenser . Any illegitimate children you create will secure your staying in the US with your "Anchor-Babies" and they too will receive cradle-to-grave care, food, housing and a small business of their choice when the government pays you to retire in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, all expenses paid . Don't bother joining the Gyrines; this is so much more lucrative! Besides: Do you know the sound a piece of fecal matter makes when it hits a fan blade? "Mah-r-r-r-ine!" <that's an old US Navy joke - sorry!>
