737802 2009-01-12 20:47:00 could that thing really run windows 98?
computers r so much more advanced today that it seems like
that couldn't do anything i had a PC simular to the laptop but it had 6GB HDD
and i think it was a little better and it had trouble running windows 98 would it be that the PC was too grumpy and sad looking that it didn't have the will to run windows 98 or is it just the parts?

I've got it running Windows 98 with Windows 98 Revolutions (makes it look like XP, among other things), and while it's a tad slow, it's good enough:

486DX-2/66 MHz or higher processor (Pentium processor recommended)
16MB of RAM (24MB recommended)
At least 500 MB of space available on HDD.
VGA or higher resolution monitor (it does 1024x768)
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device (optional)[/URL]

737803 2009-01-12 20:52:00 If it takes an IDE hdd, I'll take the hdd out of this old IPod if it fits

That'll give me an extra 35 GB

I could probably install 2k, no prob at all on it

737804 2009-01-12 22:34:00 I am looking for a cheap laptop for our church. All I want to do is run Powerpoint presentations and little else. Hopefully that means I qualify.

Our church is in the One Tree Hill, Auckland, area but I am willing to travel to pick it up.

Would be most grateful, thanks.

One of the problems is that churches do not have piles of cash, but our church was willing to pay.

Thanks.

737805 2009-01-12 22:38:00 Sorry Roscoe, but Speedy got in first.

BTW Speedy it does take an IDE hard drive.

737807 2009-01-12 22:44:00 Hi Roscoe,

Not sure what you're using, but check out this:

Makes it worth getting a semi-decent PC so you can run Videos etc from within it :)
We've been using it for YEARS now, so good.. Tried a few similar open-source apps, but none were as good. Their Email-based support is good too on the odd occasion we've emailed them.

737808 2009-01-12 22:49:00 Just realised that the laptop is in the workshop at home.
Will have a look tonight and let you know what the specs of it are and see if anyone is interested in it.

I am certainly interested, thank you. As I said before, our church, as is the case with many others, does not have all that much cash to throw about and gratis is about as good as it gets.

I'm not too worried about the specs, as long as it runs Powerpoint, which I'm certain that it will. It would be handy if it had dual monitor capability.

Hi Roscoe,

Thanks Chill. Am using ZionWorx which has the great advantage that it comes FREE! It also supports Powerpoint which is what I use to make up the presentation. Thanks for your interest.:)

737810 2009-01-13 10:44:00 Hey Roscoe,

It is a Toshiba Tecra 8000 Model: PAT800A-1143.

I can't find the exact specs of the CPU and there is nothing on the laptop for me to check but it is a PentiumII.
It has 128MB RAM, 20GB HDD, CD-ROM drive, 1xUSB, LPT & COM ports, PS/2, Composite Video output, VGA ouput, 2xPCMCIA.
It used to have an external FDD but no idea where that went. (Was never given to me)
Not sure how good the battery is or if it even works.
There is no network port and the screen is an old 12.1" dual-scan so it has the older crappy colour screen with the brightness/contrast control on the side.
I may have an old PCMCIA network card here somewhere so will look for that if you want.

It is currently running Windows 2000 but there is no license sticker on the laptop at all for any O/S.
I could put on Win98 or a fresh install of win2k if you like? Either way I will need to wipe the HDD as it still has old data on it.

Would you want it?
All I would ask is that you pay for the courier unless you want to pick it from Whangarei.
