740411 2009-01-20 03:18:00 Anyone here a video editing guru?

Just after the best option for Logging and Capturing footage. What the best capture method is, i.e DV-PAL 48KHz lada da da.

Going to be put on a DVD and viewed primarily on 4:3 aspect ratio TV's. Wanting to know what the best format to capture it as so i can retain as much quality as possible.

Also it would be great to know what the best format to export it as when i take it into iDVD.

Cheers.

740412 2009-01-20 03:20:00 PAL is NZ's format. And most TV's should / would support it

It'll only be as good as the original. If the original is crap, the finished product will be too. But, since or if its DV / from something thats connected with firewire, it should be good enough

I have been editing video for many years.

If you want a simple programme, Windows Movie Maker is ok for most uses, but with only one soundtrack it is limited to what you can do and the soundtrack can make or break a video so it needs to be good.

I have been using Pinnacle Studio 8 for some years now. It is simple to operate (that's good for me!) and you can turn out very professional looking work.

It has three audio tracks, one that comes with the video footage and two that you can add what you need.

I do not use the all of the original soundtrack shot with the video all that often, as it is often not as good as any sound effects I may have.

Do not make the mistake of talking to the camera with the idea of using it in your finished product, just for notes for yourself. It is better to record a commentary later.

Speedy is correct. Everything needs to be good right from the start. You can't improve crap.

I use Mini DV tapes and firewire to upload to the PC. Quality is excellent. From there I can easily burn the edited video to a DVD.

If you want any help, please ask. If you are in Auckland, I would be happy to meet up with you if you think that would help.

Have fun.

He is using a Mac with Final Cut. That makes Movie Maker and Pinnacle Studio look real novice programs.

Final Cut and Final Cut pro are high end Mac Video editing programs, and having used both plus the ones you mention I prefer Final Cut any day.

Jams if your playing back in New Zealand use Pal DV and 4:3 is fine. Export in full mov format and iDVD should be able to deal with that.

Final Cut should capture via firewire in raw MOV format with best audio.

740415 2009-01-20 04:02:00 Yer same here

I use a DV cam here. And burn to DVD after. I started off with MM, its not too bad for importing the video. For a basic program

But, now I use Videostudio x2 pro. Not a bad program at all.

It lets you import / edit / add commentary etc after

Makes a lot of sense to me.

Bantu: What Ken is saying is, "It's not what you have it's the way that you use it."
Very true.
