740160 2009-01-18 23:28:00 Just wondering if anyone has owned or knows where I can play with those eBook things.
I have seen a few in magazines they are supposed to hold quite a few books but I can't seem to find anyone who owns one.

740161 2009-01-18 23:32:00 Just about any Palm PDA/Phone will run a program called eReader - I have over 100 books accessible on my Treo - try TradeMe...

There are other hardware devices available other than Palm - often purpose-built. But the Palm gives me many other functions also.

740162 2009-01-19 00:09:00 Just had a thought - there's a windows version of eReader available (free, from memory) and there are a few free eBooks on the eReader site too... johcar (6283)
740163 2009-01-19 00:38:00 Both myself and sherman own a Sony PRS-505 (www.sonystyle.com) ebook reader - if you are in the wellington region you're welcome to have a play with mine. Erayd (23)

And if you wanna know what the screen REALLY looks like, here's a few pics of mine...

I really like my Sony reader. Pity you can't buy them from NZ though :(

You can fit 100's of books in its 200MB of internal memory, and if you run out of room, there's always the Memory Stick Duo or SD slot...

Apologies for the pics, they don't do the actual clarity of the text any justice.

740166 2009-01-19 05:57:00 Do you use them much? All the time, usually more than 2 hours daily.

Where do you download from and how much?Mainly fictionwise, occasionally ebooks.com or baen/webscriptions, and very rarely booksonboard. Prices vary per book, but are usually pretty good (although the current exchange rate doesn't help, as all those sites charge in USD). There is also plenty of free material out there (mobleread collection, gutenberg project etc).

I normally purchase in DRM-free BBeB (LRF) if available, or if that isn't available I buy MS reader files (LIT), strip the DRM, and convert to LRF.

What other functions can you run or what types of things other than reading do you use them for?Erm... more reading? You can use it as a rudimentary mp3 player, but it's not too good in that area, and obviously the battery will drain a lot faster while doing this. Without using the MP3 player or cardreader slots, I usually get around three weeks per charge. I never shut the device down, just leave it on standby when not using it.

Let me know if you have any more ;). I can take some *very* close macro shots of the screen if that would be useful.

If you're looking for a good ebook management program, calibre is excellent .

[Edit: As sherman rightly points out above, you can't buy readers in NZ - your only option here is to import them. B&H Photo ship them internationally, usually very quickly (mine took three business days to get here from New York).]
