739621 2009-01-18 00:07:00 Quite right Digo.
Many is the time that I have followed "free download" and found it not free, there can be no excuse, they need to be told off.

739622 2009-01-18 03:15:00 The one that annoys me is "digital download" when referring to licensed music downloads. All downloads are digital! Nermal (7077)
739623 2009-01-18 03:28:00 When someone downloads something from a website, the website owner is charged by their website hosts for that data that their website visitor has used. That is what they mean by not charging you for the download(eg it is free to download). There are filesharing websites that do charge people for downloading stuff. I don't think it is misleading, but maybe they should say free'to' download. Even if it was, NZs consumer laws wouldn't apply unless it was a NZ website. robbyp (2751)
739624 2009-01-19 09:03:00 Errrr NO - the site clearly says " Free Download" not the same as free software - which is the whole object of this thread.

You're right (my wording was bad), but Digby's whole point was "why use the word 'Free' when the software is not ?

739625 2009-01-19 09:38:00 I know whats being said - and sometimes it does suck - but its not really false - if a site says free download - its not costing you any thing apart from a bit of Internet usage to download the software - BUT IF they say the software is free, then ask to pay for it thats a different matter .

Some Software is free to download and to use - with no time restrictions - and thats good, other times the "free" version may have limited functions, Watermarks and to get the full functions you need to part with your $$ .

If a site said - you pay us $1 to download the software - Yeah right, who would .
Take MS for example - you can download Office 2007 - works fine for a limited time - then if you want to keep using it fully you need to buy it .

MS don't charge you for downloading it - maybe your ISP does in traffic usage .

So the two differences are: Free Download or Free Software - two totally different items .
Most of the time people are to lazy to fully look at what the site says - if the site has a Buy Now /purchasing button if you normally look it will say trial - etc .
Heres a classic example AVS media (http://www . avsmedia . com/) - Free to download - BUT if you want full functions with no time restrictions or water marks - if you click on The registration it cost $$ .

739626 2009-01-22 03:47:00 Just as annoying for me is the web sites that require you to log in as a member. No mention of payment just fill in your details to gain access and after sending information that they require they telll you that you can now log in.
You do so and are taken to another page where they tell you, you have to pay.I know I am not very savy but the information that you now have to pay could be given before you sent all you details dont you think?
