739657 2009-01-16 23:48:00 Tawharanui (www.arc.govt.nz).

A bit of travel required from Wanganui. Great spot though - excellent beach too for swimming, surfing and fishing.

Eventually I intend to take the family right around both islands.

739659 2009-01-16 23:51:00 how far do you want to travel?

739660 2009-01-16 23:53:00 How much facilities you looking at? Here around Nelson you have the big sites such as Tahunanui, Kaiteriteri and Pohara Golden Bay. A lot of house busses spend the winter at McKey domain at Ruby Bay quite basic but cheap gary67 (56)
739661 2009-01-16 23:55:00 Powered sites preferred, Though as basic as possible, Don't like those top10 parks. Coast, trees, rivers, lakes, all that stuff. Metla (12)
739662 2009-01-16 23:56:00 Here's another one, possibly more suited to a house bus: Kai Iwi Lakes (www.communities.co.nz). The photos on the site are crap and only indicative, but I remember many alcoholic weekends (pre-season) spent here in my mis-spent youth. johcar (6283)

Bit of a contradiction of terms as most cheap sites are basic and don't have power

739664 2009-01-17 00:08:00 Never said anything about cheap, Just don't like the fully built up Top10 branded parks, hell, if there were motel units around me, I'd leave the family in the bus and shack in the motel.....

Lack of power is not a deal breaker.

739665 2009-01-17 00:47:00 Good campsites would probably be a matter of a person's opinion, what I like you might not and visa versa.

http://www.nzcamping.co.nz/ - Has a good listing of camp sites.
http://www.doc.govt.nz/ - Also DOC campsites are sometimes free and a bit more basic.

Omokoroa campsite I like. We have also stayed at a couple of quiet ones up towards cape Brett, not sure if they are still there or not. A lot have been closed down over the years since we started camping.
