845200 2010-01-03 06:28:00 When I was in New Plymouth the other day and staying at my sister's, I started up my laptop (wireless) and discovered, that not only the neighbour had an unsecured network, but also seemed quite happy to share ALL her files with anyone who happened to have a wireless laptop! My sister rang and only her 11 year old son was there.
I explained that his mum needed to get her network secured and that I was quite happy to come over and do it for free. He said he would give his mum the message, however two days later and still I could see everything on their "shared folder".
How can people be so stupid???!!! Geez, if I was a nasty person, I could have done all sorts of things to their computer!

845201 2010-01-03 06:41:00 I would suspect she was techno un-savvy and the message passed on by her 11 year old may have been confusing or jumbled. I would try to speak to her again.

Good on you for offering to help her fix it. :)

845202 2010-01-03 06:44:00 This reminds me of a story a friend told me about someone inadvertently sharing videos (of a very... personal... nature) over a public network, using iTunes. somebody (208)

Yes we did try to speak to her about it, we went and knocked on the door but only the 11 year old answered the door. My sister said that she was probably there but is a bit weird sometimes and might not have wanted to discuss it.

Oh well we tried, and I guess that when I go over to my sister's again in three months time that it will probably be the same. I should just send a note to her in the mail thanking her for the use of her connection in checking my email and facebook!

845204 2010-01-03 07:21:00 Reminds me of a customer I deal with, her neighbor was the same, she rang the neighbor to advise her - the neighbor didn't believe me - she said she had an "expert" set it up and it was perfectly fine.

The neighbor said I must be dreaming -I told the person to go check their printer - Why she said -- I'll prove it, She was dreaming when I clicked on on the printer and told it to print a test page from across the street where I was

She then asked me to come over and fix the problem.

Sometimes it takes something to happen for people to wake up - like a sudden high increase in internet usage for example.

845208 2010-01-03 19:32:00 I have had idiots tell me:

Oh we are in the country, no-one will bother. (Wrong, loads of people know this and go out on purpose)

We are friendly and don't mind sharing. (For how long?)

845209 2010-01-03 20:09:00 Similar experience, except it was a corporate company (I knew the account-holder). They didn't take notice until I logged into the router, sucked out their username / password, and then logged into their ISP and changed their plan. Gave them an extra few gigs, but said I could have easily cancelled it instead. They sat up pretty quick alright.

It's not rocket science either, anybody with semi-decent Google skills can find the stuff to do it.

That said, I *do* like Wainuitechs idea! :D Really must try that one myself sometime
