2009-01-22 09:32:00 | given this thread about a box that has about 10000 virus hits... pressf1.pcworld.co.nz how bad will it have to get before you just give up and re-install?? many computer tech's I know recomend a full re-install at the first sign of issues. others feel that if you work hard at it you can clean any messed up system. your thoughts??

2009-01-22 09:52:00 | If it can be fixed-fix it...if it can't...repair install:D Blam That about sums it up - generally speaking if the PC has minor infections. I would repair, BUT if its badly infected, or unstable or Sometimes if you get certain infections or certain things are happening save all the data and wipe the drive. Thats where a LOT of the cowboys make their money, but are only around for 5 minutes then disappear - convince a person they can fix a PC within an hour or less ( sometimes you can) charge a LOW rate - the person thinks they got a good deal - until the problem reappears withing days or even less then they need to call in someone to do the job correctly - which if they had done so in the first place would have cost them less in the long run. I lost count how many "patch Jobs" I've had to repair from "Wanna Be's / Cowboys" --- sure my rates are not the lowest - BUT I'm booked at least a week ahead usually - word of mouth about good service is worth a lot. Edited: Regarding the Poll - killing the viruses / Malware is not the problem - fixing the damage they do can be "testing"

2009-01-22 10:04:00 | I reinstall once every couple of years. | --Wolf-- (128) | |
2009-01-22 10:27:00 | I'll usually do a reinstall every few months anyway, prevent bit-rot etc.. If there's just one or two strains of Virus, then I'll generally do my best to fix it, but not for a few hours .. if after 10-15 minutes I know its gonna be a super-long haul, it'd probably be better to ask the customer about a format. At least, that was a few years ago when I worked at the Cyber Cafe :)

2009-01-22 10:29:00 | It depends really - if I have a lot of applications installed I am a lot more reluctant to reinstall - but thats just my lazy side surfacing :P | Bozo (8540) | |

2009-01-22 19:21:00 | Sometimes a dual boot pc has its advantages.....if 1 o/s gets inoperatable, the other could be used to cleanse and walk away....LOL | SolMiester (139) | |
2009-01-22 20:04:00 | If it can be cleaned without trashing windows then I do. Sometimes if its already done too much damage then I'll retrieve their stuff and wipe it.
