846105 2010-01-05 21:05:00 Nod32 is as good as it gets. KarameaDave (15222)
846106 2010-01-05 21:07:00 Most people would choose NOD32. (Have you, or are you intending to pay for it)? I could pay for NOD since Chillisoft are just down the road, but nah. I'm using Microsoft's program at the mo. Used to use Avast, its OK, its probably not as memory hungry as MS's one. But this will do for now Speedy Gonzales (78)
846107 2010-01-05 21:32:00 Also I wouldn't install programs on the second partition.

I have no idea if you might want to dual boot XP and Win7 or a Linux flavour in the future but you might want to think about that when partitioning although the partitions can be changed without losing data with free software should you want to.

846108 2010-01-05 22:49:00 Thanks again for all your great feedback..you're lifesavers!! I was intending to pay for NOD32 although I do have iolo System Mechanic Pro which also has system guard with it that I have used in the past and has been great at picking up any intrusions.

Eventually what I'd like to do (in future) is to get an SSD to use as a boot drive and use the HDD for data etc. I'm also thinking of going to Win 7 when this happens.

Good plan.

846110 2010-01-05 23:11:00 just on a different tack...for purely financial reasons...I'm thinking of going with Win 7 Home Premium to begin with...any comments on this version??? clevertrev (12879)
846111 2010-01-06 00:38:00 Depends what you want the version of windows 7 to have. Some versions have more features than others. Dont know how accurate this is (en.wikipedia.org). But it shows you what the different versions have and dont have Speedy Gonzales (78)
