743754 2009-01-31 23:46:00 Hey all,

Been making music for a long time now. I have done, and am doing a few covers of songs - mostly very popular and well known pieces.
Searching google NZ I cannot find any written laws about the recreation of copyright music, I would like to be able to sell these final songs but ofcourse need to do so legally.

Anybody have some info on what you can and or cannot do regarding recreated music? Whether or not it sounds much like the original.

Thanks

(I remember stereogram doing a cover of 'back in black', they're a NZ band, and have obviously sold the cd with the cover on it (good cover, at that!))

Thanks again :banana

743757 2009-02-01 07:41:00 Golden rule is you must ask the original owner. Or get in touch with APRA, but most owners are stoked somebody wants to use their music and dont have an issue.
Contacting the owner is normally painless and have links on their websites or myspace etc

Perhaps if they have a forum you could put a cleverly worded title to ask if they charge anything for someone to create a cover and then on-sell it.
