743694 2009-01-31 15:55:00 On a cabin I'm helping restore and remodel in Idyllwild, this is what the "professional" bug inspector missed .

We pulled the outer kin off the walls to see what all the clicking and clacking noise was, and called another bug-expert to see what his competition missed .

The customer/owner was not amused .

They are carpenter ants and can bite and gnaw through wood seeking food . They don't actually eat the wood, but damage it badly in their pursuit of microscopic food .

Treatment was a one-shot of Chrysanthemum oil . All died in a matter of moments with a few deeper-buried stragglers a day or so later .

Chrysanthemum oil is pretty harmless to humans and animals but interferes with the bugs neural system wiring causing paralysis and death . It smells good too .

I hate Ants and we have had them in the wall once this year. My Bug man normally does the outside of the house every year, but with a dry year the ants are around more this year than normal.

Persistent little buggers they are too.

743696 2009-02-01 00:44:00 Same as Pyrethrum. I just used 4 days ago a mix of Permathrin and Pyrethrum to knock out a wasps nest using a pressure spray nozzle poked into the rubbish pile where they were nesting.
That combination is deadly to wasps.

Permathrin (Yates Insect Spray) with a 'wetting agent' is a good long term treatment for ants that invade the home, spray around the window sills, doorways, concrete etc. it can last up to 3 months if not directly in the rain.
