| 742708 | 2009-01-28 10:35:00 | Hi all, I am currently working part time for a company who deals with various services, one of which involves postage. As part of my job I am required to sort mail into different bags. Yesterday it turned out I had put something in the wrong bag, and it had to be couriered to the right person, at a cost. My employer has stated that I have to pay this cost. Does my employer have any right to require this? I haven't signed a contract (I have asked to twice and been told they'll get around to it.) Apparently it has happened in the past, and the other employees have been happy to sign the deduction form, but ****ed if I'm going to sign it. |

Not only that, but an employer cannot expect a perfect record from any employee. Mistakes happen in the workplace and they cost money more often than not. It's a business cost. However, I would seek some sort of legal opinion on this matter. Look in the Yellow Pages for employment lawyers and make a few phone calls - you will usually find one that is willing to give you general information (as opposed to advice) on the phone because your question is not complicated. |

Tell him you will take him to employment tribunal, they would love to get their teeth into that sort of behaviour from an employer. |

Your mistake is no different from making a typing mistake in an email, spilling your coffee or slipping on the floor. If you made truckloads of errors, there may be a case for retraining at best. Where I live, we had a boss of a gas station trying to bill his staff for customers had driven off/stolen gas. Once many of his good business customers learnt of his shabby treatment of his staff, they apprached the boss and made known their intent to shift suppliers, he changed his stance. Your boss would seem to trying to make a point but is coming across as an authorative bully Good luck!! HH |
