846205 2010-01-06 01:26:00 Hi Guys, I am having trouble with my DVD writer not recognizing any the discs (DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+RW) this happens on both my desktop computer and my laptop. "The Disc in the drive is not a writerble CD or it is full " appears when I insert a disc to write the selected files. This problem has only just happened, could it be due to a recent M/S update ?????? Cheers Grampsey. Grampsey (10603)
846206 2010-01-06 01:36:00 Have you run a lens cleaner through the DVD recorder/player lately?

What Brand of media are you using?

846207 2010-01-06 01:40:00 Is this an external drive?
Have you tried upgrading the firmware on the drive?
Tried a different brand of discs?
Have you tried a cd rather than a dvd?

"The Disc in the drive is not a writable CD or it is full "
(I have had problems with an optical drive that would read/write dvds but not cds).

846208 2010-01-06 01:46:00 Hi Zippity, no I have never used a cleaner, the fact that the problem is on BOTH the desktop and the laptop seams strange -- the only recent changes to both computers that I can think of is the M/s updates. I use TDK discs. Cheers G. Grampsey (10603)
846209 2010-01-06 01:52:00 Hi feersumendjinn, the drive is an internal one, just about to try a firmware upgrade. Strange it will write CDs !!!!! G. Grampsey (10603)
846210 2010-01-06 01:57:00 I've seen a few DVD RW drives that will work with CDs but not DVDs, CDs require less precision to read and write, if the laser is on the way out it's not uncommon for CDs to work but not DVDs for a while, eventually you'll find that it gives up all together.

This is weird that it's happened with the notebook and desktop at the same time though, it may well be a software thing. What software are you using to write the disks?

846211 2010-01-06 01:58:00 Yep. both computers will write to CD's but not DVD's. Grampsey (10603)
846212 2010-01-06 02:11:00 I'd say your drive is dying (the one I had trouble with, was replaced under warranty), give the firmware/cleaning a go though. feersumendjinn (64)
846213 2010-01-06 03:15:00 What version of windows are on both? Dont think its an update. What program are you using to burn whatever to it? If youre using XP, it doesnt support burning to DVD natively. Without an update Speedy Gonzales (78)
846214 2010-01-06 04:27:00 Hi Speedy, XP Home SP3. I use the XP for burning. What is the best way to do an update ?? cheers Grampsey. Grampsey (10603)
