743902 2009-02-02 19:12:00 Alot of People are generally sick and tired of ALL boy racers. Even if you think you are a responsible 'car enthusiast', why should the general population have to put up with the noisy car exhausts, the unnecessary accelerating, revving of engines etc etc.
Public roads are for commuting. It's not a recreational area. And there is absolutely no skill whatsoever in putting your right foot down on the gas pedal, so why do they think it's clever?
Even the so called 'responsible' ones are the ones taking stupid risks and being a general nuisance (tailgating, cutting corners).
I say it's about time New Zealand put a lid on the whole culture and these juveniles (and they are not necessarily young) found a decent hobby rather than inflicting their interests on the rest of the population.
I'm all for freedom etc but not when it infringes on other people's rights (eg. the right to a good night's sleep). The boy racer culture is making this country look 3rd world.
There's no shortage of things to do in this country - you don't know how lucky you are. Thanks to a small population, we enjoy alot of freedoms that other people in the world don't get. It's a shame this freedom is being abused in such an inconsiderate way.

743903 2009-02-02 20:50:00 The boy racers should be an easy problem to fix.

What about the rest of the drivers on the roads? Kiwis are notoriously bad drivers.

at the end of the day police only have themselves to blame.

they deliberately refuse to enforce the road rules which simply creates bad drivers. bad drivers breed hoons. add numbers, communication and organisation to hoons and you get boy racers with a deadly attitude.
if you let people think that intimation with vehicles and car crashes is just "normal" then you will always get boy racers.

tackling just boy racers is a band aid on a bleeding artery.

743904 2009-02-02 21:10:00 johnnyfrango, the problem is you're not describing the 'responsible' ones still..

The real enthusiasts dont have the super-loud exhausts, and they dont drift around corners at 4PM in the afternoon down a main road.

The real enthusiasts are the ones with the nicely modified cars that have poured many hours of their heart and soul into making the vehicle classy, fast, nice to drive, and also legal. Not what you described.

It sucks how so many backyard modified cars have given the rest a bad name, it truly does.

Also, I wouldnt go quoting "Its my right to this, my right to that..."
Read here for the beginning of an ocean of information out there on Human Rights:
en.wikipedia.org

Technically speaking if we were to follow your chain of thought, then its the drivers "human rights to freedom of choice" which empowers him or her with the option to modify their vehicle in any such legal way that he or she chooses.

Please, dont go into Human Rights, its a damn huge topic ... ;)

743905 2009-02-02 21:18:00 Question:

The cop that got blocked in by cars, is/was he allowed to use his vehicle to 'move' them? (ram them)?

His life was threatened so I don't see why he didn't do this (safer than going through the crowd, right?) unless he just isn't allowed to do this?

743906 2009-02-02 22:00:00 He probably did not want to inflame the situation further: from a few louts chucking bottles to a raging mob.

That, plus the fact that whatever he had done to extricate himself (like ramming another vehicle) would naturally have been misinterpreted and blown out of proportion by the media and Joe Public, yet again dragging the reputation of the Police through the mud. This would especially have been the case had he injured an "innocent bystander". I believe the Police are only allowed to use 'reasonable force' - which can be very subjective...

In short, he was in a no-win situation...

The media probably would have gone something like this:

Mad Cop mows down Teens in a fit of Road Rage!

Man our media sucks

743908 2009-02-02 22:07:00 On last nights TV1 news they interviewed one of the boy racers at that incident and he said the cop asked for it, if he hadn't started throwing his weight around. What arrogance. Even this young guys mother said they should be stopped.

743909 2009-02-02 22:09:00 Now, if he had a gun....

Anyway, they don't upset me, and I consider some twat hanging the arse end out in a $2000 car just as much an enthusiast as someone who spends large and drives normally, they are both digging what they do. cars with some serious cane-ability.

I don't see boy racers as a problem I see not being made to suffer any consequences for huge fines as the issue, it breeds disrespect and is just another example of how the go soft policy of the last decade has bred a bunch of ****heads. ****heads who know they can get away with intimidating the cops....because the law is weak.

Mum, Dad, Kick their arses. A good crack will go a long way.
Cops, Give them the biff
courts, Lock em up for unpaid fines, at minimum rates, 1 hour of lockup for every $15 they owe, and make em work 10 hours a day while inside, the rest of us have to do it.

743910 2009-02-02 22:17:00 Put a total ban on any car modifications. Put some responsibility on the parents as well.

If I had not spent so much money on cars and booze in the 1960's and 70's I would be able to afford a fantastic house or a couple of great cars now. Twin Carbs on an Austin A40 to squeeze about an extra 2 MPH really was a waste of money when I look back on it now:-)

743911 2009-02-02 22:21:00 They are ignoring all the rules now, adding more about modifications will do nothing.

We have far too many laws as it is, we don't need new ones, Just enforce what we have, There are dozens that can be applied.
