Before the 1987 stock market crash the DSIR cafeteria was full of market chatter by those newbies who had discovered the share market, and about how their shares had increased in value since the day before and how rich they were getting . . . . . . . . . They all fell strangely silent after the crash . . . . . . . . Year Unemployment rate (US) 1923-29 3 . 3 1930 8 . 9 1931 15 . 9 1932 23 . 6 1933 24 . 9 1934 21 . 7 1935 20 . 1 1936 17 . 0 1937 14 . 3 1938 19 . 0 1939 17 . 2 1940 14 . 6 1941 9 . 9 1942 4 . 7 Source: . bls . gov/opub/cwc/cm20030124ar03p1 . htm" target="_blank">www . bls . gov For people like Cic, anyone just slightly to the left of Genghis Kahn and Roger Douglas are Socialists :) I'm surprised Cic cant seem to remember what socialist UK was like under Clement Atlee and his faceless grey men, hellbent killjoys . Nationalised everything in sight . Anyone who thinks the previous NZ Labour Government was Socialist doesn't know the meaning of the word :clap Then in 1956 we had that erudite Aneurin Bevan preaching sedition and treason on Hyde Park corner over Britain France and Israel taking on Nasser to regain the Suez Canal . The Americans took the opportunity to stab us in the back over that, as they hated British Imperialism and did everything they could to dismantle the Empire :) Bevan was uncharacteristically quiet when the Ruskies invaded Hungary a month or so later Then later we had Harold Wilson, who re-nationalised it all again, then Jim Callaghan, (then I escaped UK and came to an even more regulated and controlled country and where Muldoon and the National party were somewhat to the left of Mao :) ) Tom Driberg . vile creepy Labour MP, proven to be in the pay of the KGB, and others . I used to go up to Sheffield to visit steel works over a period of some years, and never knew whether the firms had been privatised or had been re-nationised again by the latest change in government  |

It would be good to see them go the way of NZ First. You do realise that you live in a democracy, don't you? You know it is within your power to get a few like-minded people together (shouldn't be hard - just send off a few PM's here) and form a political party of your very own. You could make a case for outlawing the Labour Party, building Bangkok-style prisons, death penalty, castration of burglers - whatever you like! Then you could see if you had the support of any significant proportion of New Zealanders in a general election. I'm picking you wouldn't even be able to get 500 members for registering with the Commission... |

My interest is always in the the philosophy of the party and you know what they roughly are, none of course have a true philosophy, otherwise you would see some consistency in their doings. I will predict that things will not get as bad a Ter suspect, time will tell. You have to agree with Deano, our prisons shouldn't be like the Thai ones, they should be more like the Waldorf Astoria. And Butlins camps for the lay abouts. |

| 743209 | 2009-02-01 04:53:00 | Tery Porrit - They all fell strangely silent after the crash........And because Kiwis got overly scared our stock market took much longer to recover (whereas other countries had largely gained everything back in 2 or 3 years). I want to get shares when the market recovers but i worry that a similar phenomenom will occur making ours gain too slowly. |

| 743211 | 2009-02-01 06:10:00 | People went berserk following the Rogernomics deregulations, conmen and fraudsters came out of the woodwork and set up companies often ending in ...corp. Judgecorp springs to mind... People put all their eggs in one basket and then cried when the market went belly up. 'They' didn't learn their lesson and we have seen the same thing with people putting life savings into dodgy johny-come-lately finance companies with fine sounding names like 'Lombard'. It serves them right for being so stupid and greedy. There is nothing wrong with investing in the share market, as long as it's limited to discretionary spending, being prepared to be in there for the long haul with dividends as the main incentive ( as it tended to be years ago) , and avoiding speculating in companies that dont actually produce anything other than 'manipulate'. The Bird and Fortune sketch is worth watching again..........great prescience bearing in mind this goes back over 12 months.........How the Markets Really Work......... foretells the current meltdown...... www.youtube.com |

Terry Porrit - It serves them right for being so stupid and greedy.I didnt know that the definition of stupid and greedy included poor old ladies who had worked hard all their life and who did the smart thing by consulting a so-called expert advisor, who told them to invest in a company that would tell her that she was buying an apartment when actually they were sellig her a carpark...or nothing. And stupid for he rnot asking if the advisor was receiving corrupt kickbacks......and how greedy of her to want a return only a measly 2% higher than term deposit rates. |
