743640 2009-02-01 08:24:00 as being kept away from society is the punishment
Well in a way it probably is, seeing as they love raping random women, beating up people weaker than themselves, rob people, kill random people.

Being kept away from society is punishment? Pffft. Well, it is for normal people. Callous criminals are not normal. Neither are they humans and therefore should not have the same rights normal humans are entitled to.

743641 2009-02-01 09:14:00 I think we have to seperate the the hard criminals from the petty.
Rapist, Murderers and Child molesters shot be shot full stop. Get rid of them, why should we pay to keep them alive?
The rest can get imprisonment.

To absolutely sure of the crime is a different debate.

Once they have committed a crime they must know the consequences of their actions.Often the consequence is increased respect from the people who matter to them.....and better training in how to be a crook...and further dehumanisation making them ever less fit for society.......we either have to reform them better or not let them out at all. I dont think being in the middle works.

743643 2009-02-01 12:16:00 All of the talk about locking criminals up forever, or shooting them or doing whatever - it all sounds fine until you try to get a government involved.

Governments once had the kind of power to single people out from the majority of society because they broke the rules - whatever the rules were in that era or time - and they had the power to torture them, kill them or just imprison them in appalling conditions. In fact, this kind of power in the hands of governments or monarchies forms the vast majority of history.

It is only in the last few centuries that goverments have come under restraints - and this is only in a relatively small number of countries. Getting this power out of the hands of governments and into the hands of the people has been a long, drawn out and painful exercise.

What a lot of you seem to want is the Dark Ages back - or at the very least some sort of secular version of Sharia Law as is to be found in a few Muslim countries.

743644 2009-02-01 12:32:00 "With every solution arises a new problem" - think that was Murphy's law. Or someone else's. Can't remember.

The thing I absolutely think inhumane is how we are pumping needless hundreds of millions of dollars to facilitate a decent living for criminals who rapes, maims, murders, and defrauds innocent victims of their rights to a fair, safe and liberal life.

With the money that are used to pay for their clothes, their free legal aids, their fish'n'chips every Friday (or was it Saturday?), their widescreen TVs, game consoles, sports facilities, we could instead pump that money into shorthanded hospitals, underfunded public schools, maintaining of land, and the welfare of the general public. Hell, even the victims the criminals had left in the gutter.

It is criminal to instead give these criminals a decent living instead of giving truly deserving facilities the help they really need.

Most hardened criminals are not even human so I wouldnt worry about 'dehumanisation'. Most of them are utter scum beyond redemption and deserve nothing more then the price of a bullet, yet we pay thousands per rapist/murderer/molester.

The truest way to reform is isolation, then one on one training, criminal would have no contact with anybody except the person trying to help reform them.

Thats my thought anyway.

743646 2009-02-01 20:14:00 I fail to see the connection with Denmark, I'm pretty sure if we sent all our scum with their associated baggage over there they would make a mockery of that system and be running the country in a single generation.
So you think the the scum could run something,a country included?
