743184 2009-01-31 04:16:00 Well it always made logical sense to me to have the loan that was worth less than the value of the property...then the bank and the people with the loan were in a safer position.'

But overall, did having an easy credit market contribute to having good economic conditions? ie if we tighten up on credit rules does that mean in future economic growth will be slower and harder than it would have been with more easy money? So should we be careful to regulate but not over regulate?

743185 2009-01-31 04:16:00 Do all you guys work for the banks?

Considering the godawful mess the banks have made worldwide I'm waiting for the dumb-downed edition of "Economics for Dummies" to be published specially for them.

Understand your cynicism but a bank is merely a conduit for money. You deposit your wages, your neighbour runs up his overdraft. If the bank collapses, your deposit is gone and your neighbour has probably moved to Australia. Where are you going to put your next wages payment?

Assuming you pick another bank, are they going to lend the money out? Who to? - borrowers are walking away from their loans......

This way lies economic collapse and it is the reason governments are offering guarantees - which incidentally are not free. The banks pay a margin to the government. No free rides but at least economic security for the community is achieved while everything settles to a lower and more conservative level of activity.

743186 2009-01-31 04:21:00 Goff is a classic case of knowing better than you what you should do with your money,in other words a socialist.

And those that agree with him are tarred with same brush.

Cicero, you wouldn't know the difference between a socialist, a fascist or a nationalist. You shouldn't use words when you have no idea of their meaning.

The type they had in mind when they invented hanging drawing and quartering.

When they invented hanging, drawing and quartering there was a monarch - not a parliament so nobody had a vote, landlords and barons owned vast tracts of land and capital and worked the serfs for extremely low wages and there was no possibility of breaking free of the class into which you were born.

This became the National and Act party...

Deane a perfect troll! :clap However as you well know, we live in a social democracy and all our main-stream political parties simply have differing views on where to place the safety net. Even ACT do not advocate dismantling the welfare state getting rid of tax-payer pensions and benefits. Reduced and changed maybe, but not done away with. In fact I cannot think of an OECD country which isn't a social democracy, including the USA despite the common view that it is a capitalist shrine.

743191 2009-01-31 08:22:00 1/2 you got to be kidding. He is just a perfect liberal troll.
I dont know what pulls an economy from deep recession. Roosevelt did a bit of stuff with his new deal, a chicken on every table and two cars in the garage etc but it was WW2 that threw off the depression. Big spending on armaments. Although it was the depression and reparations that started the run into WW2.
So maybe a another big war would do it and thats easy just attack Iran and the world will be on fire again.

743192 2009-01-31 08:29:00 We could invade Fiji.

A massacre and land grab would be a hell of a way to spend a weekend.if I can get a decent boat as well I'd be stoked, sailing between my Homestead staffed with slaves in Fiji and my...wait, I'd sell the NZ crap and retire to float around the islands.
