742728 2009-01-29 05:57:00 Holy jesus burning in hellfire, I have done damages in the millions.

But that's what insurance is for.

Did I ever mention the time I drove a truck into a stationary line of traffic on the motorway, Now that's what I call ****ing **** up.

Or rolled an excavator into the Brisbane river.

or had another excavator go up in flames out in the bush.

Or the house I accidentally burned down

or how I cut the wires that controlled the freezers at a freezing works and they had to shut down and remove all the meat.

Stay in Oz. Please!

742729 2009-01-29 06:23:00 No, who's house? How did you set it on fire?

Was a farmhouse, a few km's south of Bulls, It had been converted to offices and then abandoned after the big flood ran through it a few years back. While no one was using it the rats filled the walls up with straw from the shed built alongside it.

Which is where I come in, someone had bought the shed and we were contracted to remove it and deliver, One of my crew had been cutting the steel portals with an oxy torch and it seems a piece of slurry had come to rest in a place where it could smoulder until it caught the straw on fire, which happened about 11pm,apparently it would have burned up in a few minutes, It also happened to set fire to our telescopic forklift, When one of the tires exploded it woke up the cockies for miles around and the fire brigade were called.

I was of course oblivious to all this until arriving the next morning to see...

You get that on the big jobs.

742732 2009-01-29 07:45:00 I managed to set fire to a multimillion dollar press at work while an apprentice.
Hell, we make cock ups all the time and never pay for them. If I'm feeling really guilty I will come in during my own time to fix it. If your employer can't cover losses then he/she shouldn't be in business.

742734 2009-01-29 09:03:00 Yes I just about pulled this guys house down delivering firewood. The truck had a tip deck and I forgot to put it down and caught the corner of the customers roof with it. Did quite a bit of damage. Told the boss when I got back to the yard and he did a bit of a moan. The customer rang up and did his nanna. We herd no more from him, must of got it payed for by insurance.

742735 2009-01-29 10:12:00 Thanks all. Everyone I've talked to says what you've all said, mistakes happen and the company should be prepared to have to cover them from time to time.

I received a copy of my contract today, read through it and there was no mention of performance requirements or penalties for making mistakes, so they don't have a leg to stand on in any case like this as far as I can see.

I also received with my contract a notice advising me of a meeting tomorrow evening with management, to discuss "Performance of Duties," with a warning that "... this may result in disciplinary actions depending on your reasons/explanation..." Should be an interesting meeting.

Sorry, but how exactly do you lose an office?

One thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet is that irrespective of who is actually right, there is definitely a place for interpersonal skills here. Trying to argue the letter of the contract over such a trivial issue will just get you ****listed and badly damage your chances of advancing your position within the company (assuming you want this), and potentially have an impact on any references you may need from them later. While you may technically be right, there's a big place in this world for pragmatism.

Think about it.
