846303 2010-01-06 18:27:00 I feel you have over estimated the cost/ease of data recovery.

I have done a security project on this, I have recovered about 1TB of data from old hard drives off trademe, using free tools, only an hour per drive.
many drives purchased at $5 or $10 each.

found emails, photos, web history, legal documents. passwords.
I even found a chain of emails relating to costs of running one of NZ's most well known companies....

eek...that's kinda scary then :stare:

846304 2010-01-06 18:51:00 Luckily no state secrets or cc numbers on this pc, only idle ramblings to family and friends by email etc.

But better to be safe than sorry! No telling how much grief someone could cause with my PCworld forum password!

846308 2010-01-06 21:37:00 I use Ccleane rand have it set to DOD 3 passes, not sure how well it performs but is OK by me as my HDD's get reused all the time at home for ongoing projects gary67 (56)
846309 2010-01-06 22:51:00 DOD 3 pass is what we use to wipe our corporate customers HDD's (WipeDrive Pro these days).
The average man in the street will struggle to recover data after 3 passes.

I did read that.

At the end you say economably viable and I would not bother but others do just because they can.

True.

BUT The average criminal has contacts to the above average bent tech head, these days.

846312 2010-01-08 19:55:00 recovering data after a format isn't cheap and easy, so i doubt anyone would bother :p

Not to mention most people aren't interested in your family snaps and boring files .
