Oh dear, Police get caught up in the boy-racer problem.

Many of us in ChCh are heartily sick of boy racers and the Police's incompetence in dealing with it. But now one of their own has gotten caught up in it and they're taking the problem seriously.

Why did it take a slug gun pellet to sting them to life?

We hear the boy racers roaring up and down Deans Ave from two blocks away. I can't imagine what it must be like staying in one of the motels there. And the Police do nothing about it. But when I was doing 60 kph to get home before the f&c got cold, I got a ticket.

743863 2009-02-01 10:18:00 What I find funny is the boy racers are digging their own graves.

From what I heard 3 vans and plenty of police were in town the other night (Saturday) but had the boy racers not bottled and slugged the cop, then I bet most of them would still be cruising through town and at the skids without any worries. But now they're gonna find it tough with the police FINALLY doing something about it.

But hey, take town away from them and where will they go? Suburbs? Motorways?

The thing about Harper Ave (which you can now no longer park on at night) is that it was just a park on either side, the boy racers couldn't really do any damage, right. But now they're gonna find areas where damage (most likely to residents properties) will occur.

But we'll see.

743865 2009-02-01 18:16:00 The cause is that the courts do not take things seriously and give tougher sentences and follow them through, ie make them pay their fines, make them do their community service.

The "justice" system is a joke.

743866 2009-02-01 19:14:00 Draconian measures needed eg.
1. Compulsory third party insurance where each driver must carry the cost, not the vehicle. No insurance certificate, no drivers licence issued.
2. On conviction of such an offence as sustained loss of traction, etc, substantial fine and licence withdrawn/suspended until the fine is paid in full.
3, Caught driving a vehicle while licence suspended and the vehicle (regardless of owner) is confiscated for the remainder of the term of licence suspension and stored at the cost of the driver. All costs to be paid before car is released to owner.

743867 2009-02-01 19:31:00 Police Minister Judith Collins' idea crushing boy-racers' cars is a good one and I hope the boy racers would be made to watch as it happens. As she says, issuing fines does not work for the hard core offenders because they simply don't pay.

I don't know anything about Police Minister Judith Collins but something tells me if politically-correct-Labour was still in power, crushing would be seen as against civil rights or whatever.

Good vids. Thanks.
It must be one hell of a powerful motor running those shredders!

I see from that site this comment which could be problematical to shredding or crushing: "And if the car has been financed or used as collateral for bank lending?"

743869 2009-02-01 19:51:00 It would be a tuff issue to sort out, somebody on TV was even saying set up cameras or surveillance people, use the footage to impound the vehicles at a later date kind of thing.
That was a pretty good idea i thought, you'd have the evidence then you could do your thing.

743870 2009-02-01 19:52:00 From what I understand the police and Mayor Bob Parker are doing as much as they can within the law for the boyracer problem in ChCh, thats why they have asked central government to look into it.

743871 2009-02-01 20:00:00 Im not sure its that they've been asleep about the issue until now, but finally they have some super-serious ammunition to hit the boy-racers with, after they shot at somebody with any description of a gun.

The idea of not getting license back until the fines are paid isnt a bad idea really, and jail time for repeat offenders sounds nice but from what I understand the prisons are already rather full in NZ :-/

Crushing cars isnt a bad idea, for some of the young'ns its their heart and soul and it'd possibly make a few think twice, but if its used for collateral on a loan or something, then things get messy :(
