743775 2009-02-01 02:30:00 Going away for New Zealand Protest Day or are you going to stay home and argue with the Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority about your “right” (under the treaty, no doubt) to fly your flag over Auckland Harbour?:illogical

Realistically, with the protest day falling on a Friday, the roads will be choked, as is usual for a long weekend, with holiday makers wanting to make the best of the summer sun before autumn. Why would you want to protest when some of this country’s loveliest beaches beckon? Not too much of a choice, eh?

To many people, a long weekend – be it Christmas, Easter, New Year or Labour Weekend – is a long weekend and it makes much more sense to be enjoying the outdoors in this country we call home.

What will you be doing?

743777 2009-02-01 03:18:00 As a Maori, I find that term "protest day" offensive.

I think the whole bloody thing should be abolished. That way the white people can't benefit from something that nobody gives a () about.

Just my two kumaras.

(I'm counted as a white, thanks to my Scottish dad. Almost the palest Maori you've seen, except when I see sun)

You have to admit the news is always reporting exactly that each time round.

Actually I forgot. Yay, a day off, this weekend is Gores A&P show.

I missed Southland Anniversary because they are all weird down here and take the holiday on a whole variety of other days so I forgot that too.

As long as you continue speaking of "the white people" there will be problems. There are some who might find your tone offensive. Personally, I don't give a damn what you call me or what you have to say about my beliefs. Other people's view of my opinions do not worry me at all. Derogatory terms are only derogatory in the mind of the receiver.

Why must it be "us" and "them"? The sooner people stop talking that way and the sooner people start adhering to Governor Grey's dream of one people, the sooner there will be less tension in this country - a tension that is mostly in the minds of the minority. Nobody else cares.

There may be Christians out there who believe that Christmas should be abolished just so the atheists and agnostics can't benefit from something they don't care about. Which would you rather have? A day of peace and goodwill (at least one day a year) or a day of protest (thank goodness only once a year)?

As pctek says, the news reports the protests year after year, protests that some jokingly call "celebrations." That is why I choose to call it what it is - a day of protest.

For your comment about white people, touched a nerve? Touches a nerve with me when you go and change an offiial holiday to another name, gee, let's call Queen's Birthday "massacre the Indians day".

I just don't see why we need to have the holiday.

edit: What do you think I should call non maori? Pakeha? I think that's derogratry.

743783 2009-02-01 05:49:00 Like most Kiwis, I will be ignoring and avoiding the politics and getting out and enjoying what I hope will be another great summer day.

I have a big cycle ride on Scenic Drive in the Waitakeres planned, followed by copious amounts of cold beer (to help rehydrate!! :D) and snoozing under a tree by the pool when I get home.
