743608 2009-01-31 06:59:00 Judith Collins says more jails will be needed to accommodate a rise in inmate numbers, which will come from a tougher stance on sentencing and parole. She says Labour's spending on new prisons was extravagant and there will be none of it on her watch.

Hmm, seems to be a contradiction in her thinking here !

743609 2009-01-31 07:34:00 Sounds fine to me, Can't deny the fact we need more, or that they can be built cheaper. The money pumped into them is phenomenal, and wasted.

Putting more then one to a cell could instantly double capacity.

As could chopping off their arms and legs and storing then in drawers.

743614 2009-01-31 21:07:00 The article mentioned "taking a tough stance" on crime etc etc, and most of us agree with that sentiment (including me). However out of westernised countries, isnt the ones witht he lowest repeat offending numbers (ie offending once released form prison) the countries such as Denmark whom actually treat their prisoners well and with dignity?

This point of view "feels" wrong to me (I feel like locking them up and throwing away the key), yet I think there is probably decent evidence to suggest treating inmates as well as possible is good for us in the long run (even if it feels like absolutely the wrong thing to do).

But there is no votes in that and no support, so we make the dehumanised bad people worse.......and then let them loose on us in 5 or 10 years.

743615 2009-01-31 21:13:00 I fail to see the connection with Denmark, I'm pretty sure if we sent all our scum with their associated baggage over there they would make a mockery of that system and be running the country in a single generation. Metla (12)

People do seem to forget that, other than a tiny percentage of the prison population, every prison inmate in New Zealand has a release date. They will be getting out and will be living in society again.

Anger about what they did is understandable and appropriate - it just doesn't change the fact that they will be back in society. No amount of Sensible Sentencing Trust publicity for Norm Withers changes that simple fact. No electioneering and government promises to get tougher on crime changes that fact either.

So a criminal might hate society when he or she goes to prison - but brutalise them while they are inside, starve them, force them into hard labour, make them have cold showers - whatever you do to them they will remember it when they are back in society.

We take our liberty for granted - very few people have ever had their liberty threatened at any point in their lives. Depriving a convicted criminal of their liberty is a grave punishment and something very few people have the faintest idea about other than watching television programs. But the removal of liberty in a free society is the punishment that prison facilitates.
