742592 2009-01-28 02:00:00 Doing a bit of reading up on the plans to finish off the ring road, and this (www.imagef1.net.nz) looks like the method that's going to be chosen.

What do you think? Should it go ahead at all? Should there have been another bridge? A harbour tunnel? Monorail? Free trains or buses? Asian Massacre?

Hopefully this will end up being a nice dabate. Been a while since we ripped into each other. :p

742593 2009-01-28 02:23:00 Would have thought that you would be more interested in the Ruby Bay Bypass..........
Or the recent infestation of double yellow lines on the estuary road....

742594 2009-01-28 02:26:00 Never worked out why they want to spend a billion dollars on the Waterview connection. I drive through there a fair bit and there isn't even much congestion.
Surely the money could be better spent on a fourth harbour bridge or tunnel across Waitemata harbour.

I did live in Auckland once and have always been interested in whats happening with the roading. ;)

Those yellow lines though... :angry Some idiot crashes and we all suffer.

Looking foward to the bypass though, 5-10 min shorter trip to richmond has got to be good. And hopefully no more crashes on the little passing lane before Mapua.

I bet Works has got the contract though, and they'll do what they did with Whakatu Drive - put in a cheaper quote with less lanes. Fulton Hogan were going to 4 lane Whakatu Drive right through first time, but the idiotic council thought it would be better to spend less money and only half do the job.

Now they have to go and re-do it, costing far more than it would if it had been done right in the first place.

Lets hope they've learnt from their mistakes.

Agreed, doesn't seem like the best use of money. It's almost 2 billion too.

Well the original plan was to do that, incorporated with 4 laning the richmond deviation and re-aligning the queen street/richmond deviation intersection.

Someone decided it was a bad idea to do that at the time, so we got 3 lanes.

They will eventually, they're working on the queen st intersection now. But it won't be for a while.

742598 2009-01-28 02:53:00 When I was living there I liked the idea, it would have been handy for me.
But now I don't care.
It never eases congestion anyway, the cars multiply and fill it up faster than they can keep up.

I look forward to my pleasant 100kph short trip home in another hour......:D

Words of wisdom from pctek!

I cannot understand why planners (most-likely highly-paid ones, at that) cannot see that more roads = more potential opportunity for vehicles = equals more vehicular congestion.

Money would be far better spent on alternative transport options: underground rail, a harbour crossing for public transport only (including rail, which doesn't exist in my neck of the woods at all), more regular public transport, cheaper public transport. Any one of those, but preferably all of them...

742601 2009-01-28 04:41:00 The Western ring road is supposed to link up traffic from the Airport (and further south) to the West without having to go via the city or on slow suburban roads.

I think the Waterview end tunnel option was chosen because of the local outrage on having such a visible construction reducing house values, removing houses completely and the green belt around Waterview being affected. Could be wrong tho. :p
