744977 2009-02-05 02:35:00 Not yet, altho, the flatmates daughter in law's laptop is dead.

I'll be using the restore cds tomorrow to reinstall it. After something (I dont know what yet) hit it

I'll be connecting its hdd to this to scan it / get photos off it

Altho, depending on what they mean by BROKE it. It maybe going in the bin

The only thing (that took a while to figure out), would have been PCuserwinvista's laptop :p

It doesnt have a floppy, (It needed one to flash the BIOS).

But in the end I used winimage to create a floppy image, and burned it to cd, along with the BIOS update (I had to update the BIOS since the new BIOS detects the XP CD, the old one didnt).

In the end, I managed to flash the BIOS, and installed XP on it

For some reason people will buy brand names then either throw away the motherboard drivers and/or drivers for other hardware. In some cases I have had to replace a motherboard or PSU or and I would also mention one I had recently who had a friend fix his system box.

Open the system box to discover no CPU fitted. But we did find the CPU inside the box along with broken glass. Bent pins on the cpu BTW.

So got a secondhand motherboard off Trademe. It was fixed and also upgraded for a reasonable price. $200 all up but why do I have to spend time on the internet to download drivers? Not only that I had to get his hard drive out and put the data on a spare drive.

But all is well now as I phoned the client again and he is happy as of three days ago.

744979 2009-02-05 03:57:00 Never had one yet.

There was one close call where I had to admit failure and not charge to customer. A networking problem between XP Home and XP Pro a year or two ago.

I stumbled across a fix the next day and dropped by and sorted it out though.

Can't remember what was actually wrong now...

744980 2009-02-05 04:13:00 There's your problem :p

Only unfixable prob I've had is on one really old machine infested with spyware etc that needed a reformat - can't boot from cd... not even in BIOS :groan:

Would it have anything to do with being different architecture

 This forum needs a better sarcasm sign

Vista? and a NuBus Mac? You probably couldn't get worse compatibility even if you tried

744981 2009-02-05 04:36:00 Once after installing Vista SP1 there was a BSOD...repairing didn't work...had to reinstall in the end.. Blam (54)
744982 2009-02-05 05:05:00 I had a customer who's daughters laptop had had the password changed by some other kid at school, I said it wouldn't be a problem having accessed other machines where passwords had been forgotten. But the bios had a password as well which they didn't know and I was wanting to boot from CD. So I couldn't get the laptop open to clear the cmos (by couldn't I mean it wasn't easy to get into) I don't like opening laptops, other than drive bays, wifi or hdd access compartments as I have had bad experiences opening my old one, and having trouble with the keyboard ribbon.

I said I could have done a system recovery accessing the hidden partition, which would have made it operable again, but she didn't want to do that.

I gave it back, didn't charge her and recommend that she send it to acer or asus, can't remember which it was, so they could reset the cmos.

744984 2009-02-05 17:11:00 i've had the odd challange along the way when it came to reinstalling and fixing eg ancient laptops/PCs with no CD drives or the ability to install one. fixed by either using laplink/windows direct cable connect or more recently a compact flash card which fits windows 98 setup on quite nicely as for the never been fixed issues... an old toshiba showed a KBC error and wouldnt do anything. ended up chucking the poor thing :( and apart from that most of my PC fixing stories end happy williamF (115)

744986 2009-02-05 21:43:00 Loaded 32 bit Office on to my daughter's University laptop, forgetting that this had only a 16 bit processor. It worked, but oh so s l o w l y. Eventually managed to uninstall and reinstall 16 bit program. My name was mud around here for one Uni term. :o:o Richard (739)
