746819 2009-02-11 21:50:00 Why does people of today have to pay for people of yesterday?

The Maori of today are paying for the people of yesterday. They are not equal partners in this country as they were promised they would be. That's what the settlements are about.

And the Crown is a continuing entity - it doesn't just stop every thirty years or whatever, or at a change of government. It was the Crown that made the promises to Maori - and the current government (ie: the cabinet in counsel with the Governer General - the Monarch's representative) is the Crown.

746820 2009-02-11 21:56:00 But the Vikings went home, their settlements in Pomgolia fizzled out and miserable ones at that. Sure they did some rape and pillage expeditions.
All complaints to Norway and Sweden please this isnt the complaints dept here.

Good to know you don't know your history, they settled in England,b4 it was England and were "included" as the maoris are by Alfred.
And they lived happily for ever after.

746821 2009-02-11 21:59:00 Wouldn't go that far  But whats done is done, you cant change the past - the current government may be able to change back or alter some decisions - thats just the way it goes - it doesn't matter whos in government, they will always do something that people dont like, sure Labor made a mess of some things, just like National will as well - nothing is new.

I can remember some of the balls ups the last National government made, and the country is probably still paying for them - Its all swings and round abouts - always will be.

I think we are still paying for some of Piggy Muldoons mistake.

746822 2009-02-11 22:21:00 Holyoake left a fair amount of damage in his wake too. Took us from the second highest standard of living in the world and poked us onto the slopes of decline with his "steady does it" policy.

If your environment changes, it is best to change yourself too, lest you become extinct.

What I want to know is why the new government is blowing $300 million on treaty settlements so we can use the precious Haka...

The economy is turning to custard, our country is in loads of debt because of poor management by Labour, and here's National doing the same thing, wasting $300 million on treaty settlements. There's so many better uses for that money!
I know. It's bloody ridiculous. Sure the tribe may deserve some money, but $300 million and during this time of crisis?

Some godsend National is huh?

746825 2009-02-11 22:40:00 I thought Alfred fought the vikings not settled with them.
Maybe we should just change history for Cicero and call him Alfred the chicken

746826 2009-02-11 22:48:00 So where do I sign to get compensation for the ways the English treated my Scottish anscetors many decades ago?

Call me rascist - but its a pitty the English didn't take the tactics of many other exploring nations of previous times - eliminate the natives.

I guess the maori should just shutup and be greatfull that the english actually civilized and developed new zealand instead of wiping them out and starting again from scratch.
