The economy is turning to custard, our country is in loads of debt because of poor management by Labour, and here's National doing the same thing, wasting $300 million on treaty settlements. There's so many better uses for that money! |

| 746810 | 2009-02-11 20:24:00 | Its not wasted money unless it goes off shore. We give the money to the Maoris and they spend it or invest it. Just a money go round. They invest it the govt taxes it and gets it back. The Maoris were hard done by in the esp in the 1860s, really it was an illegal occupation of the country by England. Land was appropriated and confiscated things need to be put right. In reverse look at the Falklands the Argies tried to take the place over and were given a thrashing by the English. But the English had taken over 1/4" of the world at one stage. |

They were taken to task - they lost the election. And National will lose an election too - once everybody get sick of them and shallowly assumes that a government is to blame for everything that goes wrong in the world. Three parliamentary terms is about the maximum life of any government in this country. |

The Poms could have wiped them all out rather than make deals, might have been a cheaper way out since we will be paying for that mistake for many years to come. The Poms couldn't wipe out the Maori. They didn't have the martial skill and they didn't have the money. |

But the Maori of the time considered it a good deal... And before ths turns into a flame war - I do realise that there were some land seizures that were not compensated for at the tme... |

In saying that, with the payments that have been recieved, why are Maori not wealthy, only a certain few, why didn't just divy it up and be done with it? Thats right we are in NZ, milking is a way of life. Btw, I think national hassn't done too bad. But as mentioned give it time. |
