There are a lot of things that cPanel has that DIrect Admin doesn't, if you look at the feature lists for both. CPanel is also a lot faster and responsive, especially the new 'Accellerated' version, and it now heavily uses AJAX, so it is very reponsive in the web browser. There are also things such as multiple Stats programs, such as AWStats, and really good file manager web systems, including WebDav. DirectAdmin I believe only includes the old Webalizer, which is also in CPanel as a secondary stats veiwer.
It also has multiple webmail software, such as Roundcube http://roundcube.net/ , and Squrrielmail. And don't forget Fantastico. There are also lots of thrid party addons, such a RV and sitebuilders, although those depend on the webhost. CPanel is however a lot more expensive to buy than Direct Admin, so the hosting can be more expensive to buy as a result.

745979 2009-02-08 20:31:00 This list (weblist.co.nz) might be helpful? Where are most of your visitors from? Unless they are 99.9% from New Zealand, I wouldn't pay the premium associated with having your site on a server here. That's not to say that you shouldn't buy from a web host run from New Zealand, but it would be far more cost effective to buy from one with servers in the US (not to mention the fact you will have better connectivity).

In my opinion CPanel is over rated. I used it for many years, before switching to Interworx which offers a much easier to use interface and 99.9% of the same features. Plesk is also popular, so I wouldn't limit myself to CPanel if I was you.

The really good thing about using Interworx as a control panel, is that you can run multiple sites from the same control panel, each with their own statistics, email accounts, FTP accounts etc, without having to have a reseller account. It's as simple as clicking the domain you want to administer from a popup menu at the top of your control panel.

That website is not maintained, that is why I didn't list it. CPanel will also let you run multiple websites, without needing a reseller account. I have never heard of interworx, but it ain't pretty, and looks pretty basic, I don't think it is very widely used. One reason I recommend CPanel, is becuase it is so widely used, and they very regually update it, with security patches. They are also unlikely to go out of business. The main reasons hosts don't use cPanel, is bcause of cost, as CPanel is a lot more expensive, which is why you see a lot of these really cheap hosts (often unreliable), who don't use cpanel.

745981 2009-02-09 01:09:00 Just because a provider doesnt use cPanel doesnt mean they're not reliable, far from it ..

Peronally, I wouldnt worry too much about it, its not the be-all and end-all for most users. You are after the "Top" paid web host, which kind of does imply you might be prepared to pay a pretty decent amount though, so yeah ... :-/

You are correct that it isn't as widely used as CPanel, but that shouldn't be a reason not to use it . I don't want to argue the merits of each control panel or we'll be here for weeks, other than to say it is always a good idea to look at alternatives as they may suit your needs better (there are usually demos available) . In the end, for the average user, as long as they can set up a few email accounts and sub domains without too much trouble they probably aren't going to be too concerned about the control panel because they will probably very rarely use it after their site is setup (other than to login and check site stats etc) .

Cheap hosts are unreliable because they overload servers and don't know how to manage servers properly, not because they don't use CPanel . In fact, I can think of a number of web hosts with extremely bad reputations that do use CPanel .

745983 2009-02-09 01:41:00 I use Google Mail for all my domains emails, and clients of mine or people who host stuff with me also get it.. HEAPS better than squirrelmail or roundcube any day!

Google Analytics is nice for statistics, only Im not sure if it tells you complete traffic stats, but any WebAdmin console / panel worth its salt should be able to tell you that instead :)

745984 2009-02-09 07:38:00 They look alright, although im not sure 400mb will cut it for long, and im not payin out 2.5k for web hosting. for that money id upgrade my internet connection to the best

Just read it. I am not planning on spending $2,500 for a lifetime connection either.

So what is the best if I may ask?

You have not mentioned what traffic you expect to get on the site or site(s) you want to get hosted. So therefore I can not give you advice that meets your needs or wants.

745985 2009-02-09 07:44:00 i have read it, it wont suit my needs

i was kidding with the best internet, point was im not spending 2.5k

traffic doesnt really matter as most the plans im looking at have unlimited bandwidth

i think il go offshore cos nothing here seems worth it when compared to overseas
