Ever thought the poster may want to use Works and doesn't like Open office LOTS of people HATE open office and wont use it - I know many people that use works - and it does things open office doesn't.

Just to name one , a task scheduler / calender, & lot easier to get around.

Edited: Some people have hundreds of works documents going back years, and last time I tried, Open office wont open them.

And when Works finally gets knocked on the head , which should have happened years ago; they will even have more documents so they would be better off moving on to something different now.
As for tasks and a calendar, Thunderbird + Lightning will do the trick and will export in iCalendar format.

So whos to say a person has to use open office -- NO ONE - if someone wants to use works then they are able to.

Many people I know are still using works 4.5 - and quite happy with it.

Just because someone thinks one program (open office) should be used they very narrow mined - a lot of people are quite happy using what they are used to and others need to respect those people.

The original question asked if they could use Works - not what program to use instead of.

So going by the suggestion of using Open Office what do you suggest people like a lady I know that has several hundreds of works documents that she has used over the years and continues to use , that open office wont open do.

848992 2010-01-16 11:07:00 And I have Works 8 installed here so that I can read files that are regularly sent to me from other people, edit them and return same.

The OP may have wanted to read files sent to her from her daughter so why would she need Open Office?

Legality aside that is.

848993 2010-01-16 18:45:00 can I install the discs I have instead of going for open office

Yes. But. It isn't comaptible with anything other than itself.
Whereas MS Office and all the others like Open Office etc are compatible with each other.

Wainui, loads of people end up with it cause it's bundled like Nortons.

It should have been dumped years ago.

Well I certainly didn't say that they had to use OO so don't get your knickers in a twist.
As I said in my previous post the longer someone continues to use Works in the end they will have even more documents to convert so it would be better to change now. The writing is on the wall for Works getting dumped and when it will no longer run properly on a PC because of incompatibility issues they will be stuffed.

848995 2010-01-16 20:47:00 The writing is on the wall for Works getting dumped and when it will no longer run properly on a PC because of incompatibility issues they will be stuffed. ALL software is like that - so works is no different - MS works 4.5a came out in 1998 - 12 years later 2010 - I have just installed it on a persons PC running Windows 7.

So sure while works may no longer be available one day, all software eventually will have the same fate.

Edited: just for the record, Works is still being advanced, and development is still ongoing, like any other software. Eg:
Open, edit & save as MS Office Word or MS Office Excel files including
Office 2007 DOCX & XLSX formats That is a feature of works 9.

I tried that Open office Pro Yesterday -- what a heap of crap - PC went to a crawl every time I opened it, or locked up when using the gallery, and when saving in MS word, then opening in word most of the formatting was all over the place.

At the end of the day is if a person wants to use a certain piece of software NO ONE has the right to say they shouldn't because they should be using program xxxxxx. Have several / Both installed -- end of story, best of both worlds.

848996 2010-01-16 21:18:00 You are right, WT, but we all want everyone to be like us! It reaffirms our fragile little egos. Hence the Mac vs PC, Windows vs Linux wars!

The only beef I have with Works is when someone sends a document out on a list! Got one the other day and I don't have anything to read it.

Good to see Works 9 can output a doc format. Won't help much, though, as people with the later Office still send docx to all and sundry. They don't understand file formats, let alone how to change them.

Ii's still an imperfect world!

848997 2010-01-16 21:34:00 Certainly is imperfect.

Sure Microsoft will be stopping Works, but there will still me many people using older versions, and still have documents only works can open, unless they have Office 2007, so it will still be needed by some.

Microsoft are instead putting in office starter:

Microsoft Office Starter 2010 is an advertising-supported, introductory version of the productivity software. The bundle includes Office Word Starter 2010 and Office Excel Starter 2010 that have limited functionality centered on creating, editing and viewing documents.

At least microsoft are doing something about a change over as well, office 2007 will open works documents , heres how (office.microsoft.com) - unlike some other mentioned software - so at least it has on going support kind of.

Highlighted above -- wait for the complaints.

If a program is used that can save in the ODF format it means it is easily exchangeable and will last the distance of time.
You obviously really hate OO to get your knickers in such a twist.
