745966 2009-02-08 01:57:00 I'm looking for a list of the best 10 or something like that. I can find quite a few for overseas based hosts but I wanna do my bit for the kiwi economy.

Has anyone seen a list of NZ Based hosts? Google hasnt shown much to me

745967 2009-02-08 04:00:00 Ive have a VPS with SiteHost which is pretty good.

That said, Ive just got to know HostingDirect lately and they're pretty tops! Always on the ball with replying to emails, seen the Data center and its choice as, bandwidth to burn .. I believe they just got another dozen servers in last week too!

Not to mention they're really competitively priced :D

745968 2009-02-08 04:03:00 Those 'top 10 lists' are often fake, in that hosts either make up their own 'top 10 list, and stick themselves at the top, or they pay the company to rate highly on them. The best way to find a good host is by word of mouth, or by trial and error. That is how I managed to find my own hosting providers, by word of mouth. The are some NZ lists of hosts, but I won't list them, becuase they are not up to date or well maintained, and I believe that some companies post fake reviews on them. robbyp (2751)

I have looked at them in the past, but their email replies weren't too good. The problems with them that I have found, is they keep putting their prices up. They started off as being free, then raised it to $3+gst per month, now it is up to $6+gst. You also have to pay at least $15 if you want decent spam protection, as their basic plan doesn't give you spam assassin which you really need. eg. You have to have a higher plan for those 'extras' that other hosts give you at no additional cost. Also not that long ago, they lost a lot of their customers websites, and their reviews aren't too good as a result. They also use that budget Direct Admin control panel, even though it is free or low cost for the host to provide, I much prefer web hosts that provide cPanel or plesk. To me Direct Admin doesn't cut it, as it is very basic.

745972 2009-02-08 04:32:00 I hosted my websites in USA for a few years, then when I wanted a Secure one that handled Visa I used a NZ one. I went and checked out the premises and the people first before I hosted there. Bantu (52)

They will usually let you do that if you are using colocation or dedicated servers. However if you are just using shared web hosting, then they won't usually let you do that, as most hosts aren't usually located anywhere near the datacentre, and they get charged each time a visit is needed to be made to the datacentre. I guess it depends on the company, but if you are using shared hosting there is no need to see the physical place that it is stored, and many will use the arguement that it is a secure area. In fact I am surprised they let you view inside the datacentre, simply due to security.
