747629 2009-02-13 21:00:00 The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards.[1] The sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th-century America was a harbinger of the future commercialisation of holidays in the United States.[2]

I think it's rubbish,I don't need a day to show my affection,just like prefect.

She only seems as grumpy as normal.

Very true, but breakfast in bed, cuppa tea & a bonk always puts SHMBO in a good mood for the day eh!

747633 2009-02-13 22:23:00 Meh - the roman catholic church is as dodgy as hell and always has been (nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition). St Valentines Day is their idea. Deane F (8204)

747635 2009-02-14 03:07:00 I cut a single rose off a bush in my garden which caused me to bleed briefly and gave it to my separated wife. We are still friends BTW.

Not still pulling thorns out though.
