849344 2010-01-17 01:55:00 Hello, my best regards to my wise friends from this forum,

I need your advice once again.

A machine (Toshiba satellite P305-S8832, Core 2 Duo 2Ghz, 3 Gg ram DDR2667, two WD HD Windows Vista Home Premium 32bits fully updated, AVG free fully updated)

Every time I open a folder (always the same) inside "Pictures," Explorer.exe crashes and I get this error: (Advice is needed and welcome!)

(I have already gone through Windows restore, anti virus and spyware scan, registry scan (Advanced systemcare).

849345 2010-01-17 02:07:00 This may help

The error indicates that the crash is caused by a memory access violation
(error 0xC0000005) in a DLL called "MP4 Splitter.dll". Access Violations are
usually caused by programming errors (bugs). This DLL is not part of
Windows, itself - it must belong to some other program or add-on which has
been installed on the system. The crash is in Explorer.exe, so I'd guess
that MP4 Splitter is some kind of shell extension (add-on plugin) for
playing MP4 files. Search your drive for this file. When you find it,
right-click the file and select Properties. Then look under the "Details"
tab. This will show you what company manufactured the DLL file; which in
turn, should give you an idea of which application it belongs to. Once you
have determined who the file belongs to, you can hopefully uninstall that
application via Control Panel, Programs. Once the MP4 Splitter.dll is not
being loaded into the Explorer process, this crash will not happen any more.

849346 2010-01-17 02:13:00 Thanks a lot feersumendjinn!!!! You have hammered the nail on the head!!!

I have tracked this MP4 Splitter.dll down to a free application called Vista Codec Package and once I uninstalled this thing, the error disappeared!

Thanks a lot, you have not only shown me the answer but you have taught me how to read these error messages.

849347 2010-01-17 02:18:00 Yeah, just a matter of deciphering the gobbledegook ;).
Glad to help :)

849348 2010-01-17 02:22:00 The cause is usually a codec, or a file is corrupt (or a file that's installed a shell extension is corrupt or buggy). Or if you're using 64 bit, the file may not be compatible with 64 bit. If it crashes. But this may also crash windows x64, not just explorer.exe Speedy Gonzales (78)
