849386 2010-01-17 01:49:00 Since I got my old Acer laptop back from being repaired (it needed a new power connection on the mainboard), it has been incredibly slow to start up. It didn't used to be so slow before it got fixed.

Really, I mean like three or four minutes minimum to find the wireless network and connect to it!

I've run updated anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-adware on it, and cleared out anything I thought to be unnecessary from the startup process (in msconfig).

Still like winter molasses.

Once the networks have been discovered, the thing runs fine, web browsing is as fast as it should be etc.

Any ideas?

It's an Acer Travelmate 2084 running XP.

I would uninstall ad-aware and install malwarebytes. Update it then do a full scan

849390 2010-01-17 02:36:00 Thanks again Mr Gonzales.

Done the Hijack stuff, loaded Malwarebytes and I'm running it now.

Fingers are crossed, I'll let you know how it goes.

Your help is much appreciated.

849391 2010-01-17 02:37:00 Sweet, no probs :) Speedy Gonzales (78)
849392 2010-01-17 03:15:00 Well, Malwarebytes found three processes inside the MS anti-virus suite, but nothing else.

Restarted the computer, but it's still really slow to find the wireless network connection.

Any other ideas?
Joe_Davies (7849)
849393 2010-01-17 03:21:00 It wont pick it up straight away. Dont think you can do much about the wireless

Have you given the wireless adapters their own ip addresses? It'd probably be faster than if theyre on auto
Speedy Gonzales (78)
849394 2010-01-17 07:42:00 Ah, success! I downloaded Windows SP3 for XP and installed it, (well, I figured it would be quicker than reinstalling Windows) and hey presto: problem solved. Curse you Microsoft, for making my computer run slowly so that I have to update Windows!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions Speedy.
